Activists have called for celebrating diversity in society and respecting different skin colours, said a press release.

They were speaking at a seminar on “The Skin We Live In” at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). The session, organised by anti-colourism campaign “Dark is Divine”, discussed colourism present throughout Asia.

Dark is Divine Convener Fatima Lodhi said colourism was so much ingrained in our society that we do not even realise that we discriminate against our own people on the basis of skin colour on a daily basis. She said we had been practicing colourism for ages.

Lodhi said we needed to educate the masses that diversity is something that needs to be celebrated and we should respect differences and be comfortable in our own skins.

US-based Intraracial Colorism Project Founder Dr Donnamaria Culbreth said colourism had a psychological impact on the lives of the persons who are dark-skinned, especially girls. She discussed how deep-rooted colourism issues in Western societies are affecting people’s lives.

I Am Beautiful Global Chief Operating Officer Dr Julie Jung-Kim shed light upon the Asian perspective on colourism.

A large number of NUST students attended the seminar, where organisers announced collaboration between Dark is Divine and the Intraracial project.
