FAISALABAD:

Three people, including two women, were killed and a man was injured when they were attacked on their way back home from a panchayat near Balochni police station on Sunday.

Balochni SHO Abdul Ghaffar told The Express Tribune that Maqsood Ahmad, a resident of Chak 612-GB, had married Farzana Bibi a few weeks ago, a resident of Chak 63-RB, against her parents’ wishes.

He said Farzana’s parents called a panchayat to settle the issue.

The panchayat summoned Maqsood and his father Akbar Ali Khan. They went with their relatives Ahmad Ali, his wife Nooran Bibi and Fatima Bibi to Chak 63-RB on Saturday.

The panchayat decided that Farzana Bibi would be allowed to live with Maqsood if his family agreed to marrying a girl from their family to a man from Farzana’s family.

Maqsood’s family expressed their willingness to accept the decision and promised that it would be implemented.

The family stayed in the village overnight and departed in a pick-up truck early on Sunday morning.

The SHO said they were attacked by a group of men led by Lal Muhammad, Farzana’s cousin. The men opened fire at the family, killing Ahmad Ali, Nooran Bibi and Fatima Bibi on the spot.

Akbar Ali was taken to tehsil headquarters hospital in a critical condition.

A large police contingent headed by the Balochni SHO later visited the scene and took the bodies into custody.

The SHO the bodies were sent to a mortuary for autopsy.

He said a complaint by Muhammad Asif, a nephew of Akbar Ali had been received and a case had been registered against Lal Muhammad and his accomplices.

He said a team had been formed to arrest them.
