KARACHI:

Forty-nine judicial officers have been appointed against vacant posts to increase the working strength of Sindh’s subordinate judiciary, which remains vulnerable in terms of its workforce and performance.

The provincial selection board for the judicial officers, headed by Sindh High Court (SHC) chief justice Maqbool Baqar, had recommended 49 candidates, who had successfully passed the written tests and interviews, for the positions of civil judges and judicial magistrates. Sources said that more than 1,200 candidates had applied after the SHC announced the vacancies to fill 84 posts lying vacant in different districts. Of the 500 candidates who passed the written tests, 214 were called in for interviews, and 49 made it to the final shortlist. Six female candidates have also been appointed.

An official, who did not wish to be named, said that the number of vacant posts had decreased to 35, adding that these would also be filled soon. He expressed the hope that the burden on the lower judiciary, which remains overworked, would ease after the new appointments.
