A step forward: Women guides to help promote tourism

Minister urges corporate sector for own initiatives.

LAHORE: A women’s tourism wing will be established at the Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) to arrange tour packages for female students and housewives, Minister for Tourism Rana Mashhood Khan said on Saturday.

He was addressing a reception in honour of Telenor Pakistan CEO Michael Foley.

The minister said Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had launched a project to provide technical education to the youth. He asked Telenor to fulfil its corporate social responsibility by sponsoring the projects promoting tourism and technical education in the province.



He apprised Foley and his delegation of several projects aimed at promoting tourism. He said multi-national companies should help the TDCP highlight its projects internationally.

“People all over the world should come and visit the Punjab that is land of five rivers. The province is the custodian of a diversity of civilisations,” he said.

Foley assured the minister that Telenor would collaborate in promoting tourism.

Sportspersons in police

Khan said the chief minister had constituted a nine-member committee to recommend amendments to law so that more sportsmen and sportswomen could be recruited in Punjab Police.

He was chairing a meeting of Hockey Reforms Committee. Finance and Development Additional IGP Sohail Khan presented a draft of amended Article 7 of the Police Order 2002.

The minister said the government wanted to promote sports in the province.

He said funds and services were being provided for the development of sports infrastructure.

He said efforts were underway to promote hockey. He said it was due to these efforts that the national hockey team had won a silver medal in Asian Games.

Khan said a mechanism would be evolved to induct hockey, kabaddi, athletics, wrestling, bodybuilding and soft ball players to various posts to police’s general executive branch.
