INDIA: India's test-fire of nuclear capable missile 'Nirbhay' proved successful on Friday, NDTV reported.
The test was conducted from the Integrated Missile Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, just days after Cyclone Hudhud hit the state's coastal region.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) the missile can strike targets more than 700 kilometres away, giving India potent nuclear capabilities.
'Nirbhay' can be translated to mean fearless and has the ability to fly at tree-top level, making it difficult to detect on radar.
Comparable to America's Tomahawk and Pakistan's Babur, the success of Nirbhay is a giant step for India as it had not mastered a cruise missile to date. Despite having the capacity to produce ballistic missiles for some time now, the 'Nirbhay' is the first of its kind.
Nirbhay took its first flight on March 12 last year but did not yield a fruitful outcome as it deviated from its course 20 minutes after its launch and had to be terminated.
Nirbhay launches like a missile and in the early flight the small wings get deployed. It then flies like an aircraft and can even hover near the target, giving it the ability to strike from any direction.

India has no aggressive design towards any of its neighbours by producing or testing nuclear capable missiles but be ready for an eventuality at any point of time which is line with the famous saying 'If you want peace be prepared for war' and nothing more.
Nirbhay means "without fear". We don't need a foreign invader as our hero like babur who was basically from samarkand to have a missile named after them. We use prithvi and agni which means earth and fire just like magalyam means mars to us. Live and let live. Rab rakha and like babaji shakerjung said " Banda eik rab ki inamit hai, khud bhagwan aur khuda khoj usme". Rab rakha

India is mastering space technology and has started launching satellites commercially. What does it mean? Pakistan's priorities are for destruction and India's priorities are economic well being of its citizens.
India please do us a favor and fire one on Raiwind, we'll even pay for the cost.
@Stranger: answer is simple- names are Indian origin
@Pankaj: Its actually Panini who was a man.
@Stranger: Nirbhay is a Sanskrit word. Sanskrit is our homegrown language whose grammer was matured by Padini (a women lanuguage Scientist) in Taxila University near the banks of Indus river in today's Pakistan. It has nothing to do with religion.
ET please allow response to this clueless reader.
@Stranger: Are you nuts? These are not Hindu names. Nirbhay means fearless. Mangal is the the Hindi word for Mars.
The US named its Space Shuttles Endeavour, Enterprise, Discovery and Challenger; so what is about India naming a missile Fearless that in your view is objectionable? Going by your suggestion of a series of what appears to be Muslim names for females are you suggesting that being Fearless is a wholly Hindu value that does not exist in Islam?
@Stranger, Nirbhay, while it can also be given to a person, just means Fearless. Again, Akash, Prtihvi etc can be names of people, but the missiles are not named after any individual. They just mean Sky, Earth, etc. Mangal is just the Sanskrit/ Hindi name for Mars. I think this thought comes up because somebody in their wisdom wanted to symbolically show some superiority by purposely misinterpreting Prithvi to be named after Prithviraj Chauhan who was defeated by Gharui
@Aalia:
First, because you are Pakistani - let me educate you. In the Indian Ocean and the Pacific there are no such thing as "Hurricanes" - there are only cyclones.
Second, Cyclone or no, this test was bound to be carried out as it was planned much in advance and moreover the cyclone's landfall path was more than 600 kms north of the test site making the immediate area completely safe and incident free. Also, India can do two things at the same time and has the restored basic services and communications in much of the damaged areas while rebuilding is beginning now.
@Stranger: Nirbhay means no-fear in hindi,it has nothing to do with hindu or muslim
@Aalia: So shudn't u be jumping with joy to see that India has got its priorities mixed up ???
Hmmm India being a secular country -why does it launch satellites / rockets/missiles only by name Nirbhay / Mangal ... Why not Ruksana / Rubeena / Rosmary .... Point to ponder ....
Yo India! Testing missiles in hurricane hit state shows the priorities of your extremist leaders.
above picture is not of Nirbhay's missile achieved 1100 km. soon extended to 1500 and more- more than double the range of babur babur is lowered copy of tomahawk. that is why pakistan is still testing 700 km babur.
Pakistan will now test fire Hatf-IX to prove their superiority now. :)
