HYDERABAD:

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon held the Supreme Court (SC) responsible for delays in holding the local government elections at a press conference on Friday.

"We are prepared to hold them at the earliest possible date if the SC would remove the confusion," he said.

He stated that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had challenged the delimitation of local government constituencies in the Sindh High Court (SHC) last year, after which the elections were deferred.

In its April 2014 order, the SC upheld the SHC's decision to empower the Election Commission of Pakistan to carry out the delimitation. However, the Sindh government sticks to its contention that it should be allowed to form the constituencies.

Memon said that the court had ordered the changes in the local government elections law, which was enacted by the National Assembly. "As per the Constitution, no institution can dictate the parliament."

He added that he had given a week's deadline to all ghost employees working for the local government department, after which they would be removed from service. He also formed a four-member committee, comprising Pakistan Peoples Party and MQM representatives under the Hyderabad division commissioner, to take action against such employees.
