Beware the mosquito: ‘Awareness on preventative measures vital’

Educational institutes mark <br /> day by holding seminars, walks.

LAHORE: Scores of educational institutions remained open across the Punjab on Sunday to observe Anti-Dengue Day.

Awareness walks and seminars were held in several institutions to raise awareness regarding dengue prevention methods especially in the wake of recent floods.  Banners and placards carrying dengue prevention advice were placed in schools and universities.

Government College for Home Economics (GCHE) Principle Samia Kulsoom emphasised the importance of cleanliness in curbing the spread of dengue mosquitoes. She said maintaining cleanliness standards was necessary to check the spread of dengue mosquitoes. Kulsoom said creating awareness about dengue prevention methods was imperative in this regard. The college observed the day by holding an awareness walk and a seminar.

GCHE Deputy Director Mohammad Zahid said collective action was needed to overcome the challenge. Professor Gulshan Bokhari presided over the seminar and emphasised the importance of draining stagnant water and ensuring cleanliness standards to curb the spread of dengue mosquitoes.

Several offices of the Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) remained open in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan on the occasion. Scores of private institutions collaborated with the foundation to observe the day in districts across the Punjab. They organised walks and seminars and had their campuses fumigated. Banners and hoardings containing information regarding the prevention of dengue mosquitoes were prominently displayed at PEEF offices.

PEEF Managing Director Aneela Shah inspected dengue prevention arrangements made at the foundation’s head office. She said PEEF’s partnering institutions would organise extra-curricular activities such as quiz competitions to disseminate information regarding dengue prevention. Shah said it was imperative to inform students about the importance of maintaining cleanliness standards.

The University of Education also organised similar activities. The faculty and staff of the varsity were present on the occasion.

A cleanliness drive was held at the campus. Literature regarding dengue prevention was distributed among those present on the occasion. Dengue Committee Convener Habibur Rehman said draining stagnant water at the campus was the greatest challenge confronting the varsity.  He said it was necessary to drain stagnant water and ensure cleanliness standards to curb the spread of dengue mosquitoes.
