KARACHI:

Hussain Haroon, Pakistan’s former representative to the United Nations, has asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign immediately and dissolve all provincial assemblies.

While speaking at a press conference at his residence, Haroon said that midterm elections were the only solution to the country’s problems. He stressed that electoral reforms were the need of the hour. “For how many years will we continue to follow the electoral system of 1928?” he asked. “I demand that they audit the 2013 elections across the country.

Everything will be cleared and we will know if you [PML-N] won the elections.”  He shared several facts and figures while discussing bad governance and the condition of people in Pakistan. “Is it democracy when 92 per cent of children are diet deficient and 44 per cent have a stunted growth?” He pointed out that 75 per cent of people living in rural Sindh are facing food insecurity.

“What has been done for the people? Who is responsible for the present condition of the country?” he said. “No one is ready to respond. Everyone uses democracy for their own interests.” He added that the peoples’ hopes were raised after the Charter of Democracy, adding that nothing has been done for the welfare of the people or the country.
