LAHORE: Acting Advocate General of Pakistan (AGP) Mustafa Ramday, son of former Supreme Court judge Khalilur Rehman Ramday, resigned from his post today, Express Tribune has learnt.

There were serious reservations over the appointment of Ramday as acting AG and several petitions had been filed against it before the Lahore High Court.

However, Ramday cited personal reasons in his resignation document.

Ramday was appointed as acting AG in July 2013 by the Punjab government.

A petition was filed before the LHC against his appointment stating that Ramday was under aged and could not be appointed at the post. The Punjab government had responded saying that Ramday was appointed as acting AG to run routine matters of the office of the top legal officer of the province.

However, Ramday not only used to appear in the Lahore High Court but also in the supreme court on behalf of the government. Moreover, he cancelled the appointment of nine members of the Punjab Bar Council and replaced them with nine other lawyers.

The removed members challenged his appointment before the LHC. A full bench of the LHC, on July 2, had directed the Punjab government to appoint a permanent advocate general within 15 days of the receipt of court orders.

The bench, headed by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, issued this order on a petition of Advocate Rab Nawaz and others.

The bench issued the order after learning through the Punjab law secretary that the Punjab government had not made any progress in appointing any permanent advocate general, the post for which is lying vacant since the past one year.

The bench remarked that out of 80,000 lawyers in Punjab, was it really that hard to send the names of just 50 to the competent authority for the appointment of any one of them as an AGP?

Justice Shah said the constitutional post was lying vacant since ayear and all related matters were pending due to this.

Following the court order, the acting AGP resigned for having no moral grounds to carry on with the post.
