HYDERABAD:

Three Hindu temples were reportedly desecrated in Mirpurkhas on Wednesday morning, provoking a strong protest by members of the Hindu community here.

During the attack, idols of Hindu deities in the temples of Shiv, Khaitpar and Khushhal Puri in Kot Ghulam Muhammad taluka were broken by unidentified suspects. SSP Mirpurkhas Jam Zafarullah Dharejo told reporters that the idols appeared to have been smashed with a hammer.

Police used sniffer dogs to trace assailants and five suspects have been rounded up; identified as Rano Kolhi, Bhuro Kolhi, Mewo Kolhi, Madhu Kolhi and Bhago Kolhi, they are residents of a nearby village.

However, referring to the attack in Larkana earlier this month wherein a mob looted a temple before setting it ablaze, he cautioned, “This case should not be compared with the one in Larkana. During investigation we have come to know that the community has some internecine differences over the organisation of a festival.”

The local community’s representatives Mano Kolhi, Kiran Kumar, Khem Chand and Seth Ramon Malhi, among others, led a protest on the road linking the town with Mirpurkhas. The protesters threw stones and burnt tyres on the road and demanded that the culprits be brought to justice.

The Young Hindu Panchayat and Pakistan Hindu Council have condemned the attack and demanded an inquiry into this incident as well as five other attacks on the community’s places of worship earlier this year.
