KARACHI:

More than 400 students of different government schools of the city participated in a beach-cleaning drive and also planted mangroves at the Wetland Centre.

The event was organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Pakistan on Tuesday to mark Earth Day. "Today is Earth Day and today we should create environmental awareness among the citizens of the country," said the senior director corporate relations of WWF-Pakistan, Anwar Naseem. "We should protect and conserve Pakistan's natural resources by all means."

The event aimed to increase awareness among students and the general public about environmental safety. The theme of the event was 'green cities', which focused on renewable energy, energy efficient buildings and environment friendly transportation.

Visiting the mangroves forest for the first time, class-10 student Bakhtawar suggested that helping the environment should be a more regular activity. "Such activities should not be limited to one day but should be all year round," she said.
