A bridegroom who shot dead a friend of the bride at his wedding on Tuesday was arrested on Wednesday.
Police said Abdullah killed Farzana Bibi soon after nikah was solemnised.
Rafiq Ahmad, one of the groom’s parties, said the bride’s family had refused to entertain the wedding party when they reached the venue in Patraki village on Lahore-Chiniot Road half an hour before the scheduled time.
“There was an argument. However, elders on both sides pacified the offended guests and the nikah was solemnised,” he said.
Ahmad said Abdullah was then taken to the bride’s home for a ritual in which the groom is offered milk to drink.
He said Farzana, a friend of bride, cut a joke there which offended Abdullah and his friends.
“Abdullah warned her against such jokes but she ignored him. One of his friends pulled out a gun and Abdullah took it and shot Farzana.”
He said Farzana died on her way to a hospital. He said police had arrested the groom but some of his family had fled.
“After the argument with the bride’s family we were hoping for things to settle down but then this killing took place. The nikah had been solemnised and food served but the jokes at this ritual ruined everything.”
Farzana’s relatives staged a protest demonstration in front of the district headquarters hospital. They demanded that police arrest four of Abdullah’s missing relatives who they said were involved in the murder.
The protesters dispersed when police assured them that they would arrest all the suspects. Saddar Station House Officer Rai Arshad Kharal said a case had been registered against five people, including Abdullah, under Sections 302 (murder), 148 and 149 (conspiracy) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
He said Farzana’s body had been sent for an autopsy.
“We are conducting raids to arrest the remaining four suspects,” he said.

JOKE by a Sali in a marriage is common there must be something untolrabke which resulted in to a sad incedent/
a joke alone could be tolerable, a previous incident along could be tolerable, even a repetition could be tolerable, all these could be quite ok if they were not already carrying gun. But Everything happened in sequence and last result was extreme. that is adding fuel to fire.
Looks like the groom caught some wedding traits from the Game of Thrones Universe
@Pun intended: And Farzana was dying to tell the joke.
A blissful matrimonial bond sealed in blood.
@Lame chicken: You are right in one thing. Your attempt at a joke is pretty lame.
Can we please know that joke so that we can send him the same joke to prison every single day of his life till his sentence is complete!!!
What could be the joke ?
I'm dying to hear that joke.
We're missing the main objective here, what was the joke??
don't worry ....there is always a provision of blood money
We must not be so intolrent that even a joke which is routine on such occassions took a life and the newly weded groom is in jail.
@Lame chicken: Lesson in what? That retards who don't have any tolerance will kill people if their feelings are hurt?
@Imran Khan: As you can see from the comments, it just has to involve Pakistan for trolls to post something negative. It doesn't matter whether it involves, Kashmiris, Punjabis Sindis, Pashtuns or any Pakistani ethnicity. There is senseless violence at parties all over the world but some trolls find it a source of amusement rather than speak against senseless violence. In Canada this week 5 young people were stabbed and killed at a University party after exams in Calgary. We are saddened by the senseless loss of young lives but no one uses it as an excuse to make fun of a country unless they are twisted.
She must have made a joke about the groom being poor for not giving enough money for doodh pillai which is an extremely standard joke. I doubt any girl would think her life was risk for a joke people make at every wedding.
Getting sick of these incidents now. Whats barbaric times are we living in that people are shot on a mere joke. Time for reflection...Maybe we really are close to Qayamat.
What is happening is Pakistan! Crap
Talk about a killer joke!
Jahalat, intolerance, killing a person based on a joke, making marriage sound like a favor. Terrible.
“After the argument with the bride’s family we were hoping for things to settle down but then this killing took place. The nikah had been solemnised and food served but the jokes at this ritual ruined everything.”
Yeah the shooting happened, but it was the jokes i tell you. The damn things ruin everything.
So what was the joke? Just wondering.
“After the argument with the bride’s family we were hoping for things to settle down but then this killing took place. The nikah had been solemnised and food served but the jokes at this ritual ruined everything.”
No.
The psychotic groom ruined everything.
