ISLAMABAD/ KARACHI:

After a delay of more than a month, Sindh now has a new police chief as Iqbal Mehmood was appointed Inspector General Police on Monday.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the appointment of Additional IG as the provincial police chief was approved by Premier Nawaz Sharif. The posting comes amid a surgical operation by law-enforcement agencies in Karachi.

Shahid Nadeem Baloch retired as IG Sindh on February 20 and Mehmood was currently serving as Additional IGP. The Sindh High Court, while hearing a case on the law and order situation in Karachi, gave the government until March 29 to appoint a permanent head of the police force.

Sources at PM House said the provincial government had put forward three names for the post, while the federal government had singled out two other officials as well. Following consultation with key aides, the prime minister approved Mehmood’s name for the slot.
