Shabbir takes lead in memorial golf

Pakistan number one hopes to maintain momentum after day one.

Pakistan number one Shabbir Iqbal clinched the lead on the first day of the JA Zaman Memorial Open Golf Championship, which commenced at the Lahore Gymkhana Golf on Friday.


The seasoned Islamabad golfer fired five birdies for an opening round of four-under- 68 that took him on top of the table. He managed regulation pars on 12 holes and boogied just one of them.

“I had a satisfactory start to the event,” said Shabbir. “I am keeping an eye on the title and looking to maintain the momentum.”

Meanwhile, the second position was jointly held by Talat Ijaz, Imdad Hussain and Safdar Khan, who earned identical cards of 69 on the first day of the professional championship.

Ijaz fired two birdies, Imdad struck five, while Safdar had four at the close of play.

However, the competition remains open for Ashir Masih, Mohammad Nazir, Mohammed Munir and Waheed Baloch, who jointly shared the third place with similar scores of two-under-70.
