ISLAMABAD:

Doctors protested the alleged corruption at Pakistan Medical Dental Council (PMDC) for registering medical colleges without proper qualification, The Express Tribune has learnt.

Young Doctors’ Association (YDA) and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) staged a protest outside the PMDC office against the alleged corruption and mismanagement at the council.

The protesters were of the view that the officials were illegally-occupying top positions in the council and making money by registering fake medical colleges and doctors in the country.

YDA Rawalpindi President Dr Umer Saeed said that in last five years there has been a mushroom growth of medical colleges, many of which do not qualify to be registered.

He said almost every street in Rawalpindi has a medical college claiming approval from the sole registering body.

“Medical students who fail to get admission at qualified medical colleges usually take admission in such colleges after paying heavy fee,” he said.

Besides this a lot of fake doctors who do not have medical degrees have been registered and they are serving in various hospitals, he said adding that these fake doctors are playing with the lives of innocent people.

Responding to the allegations, the council members, in a press release termed the allegations as baseless.

PMDC President Prof Masood Hameed Khan said the council is functioning under the law and there is no violation of any sort.

YDA were holding protest at a time when the council’s disciplinary committee was hearing citizens’ complaints regarding their unprofessional attitude towards patients in hospitals. The objective behind the current protest is to pressurise us to withdraw all the cases, he said.

CPSP is protesting because we have stopped them from running a few illegal postgraduate programmes not included in the PMDC schedule-III.

To streamline financial matters at the council, we have requested the Auditor General of Pakistan to immediately conduct an audit, he said.
