FAISALABAD:

The speakers at a seminar here stressed the need for censorship and monitoring of online content to control sex crime.

The speakers said that the chief justice should advise provincial government to legislate pornography control laws in their provinces, especially those with increasing number of rape incidents.

The seminar was arranged by the Faisalabad Citizens’ Forum (FCF) on Sunday. It was presided over by former Social Welfare Department director Chaudhry Muhammad Saleem. Representatives of several non government organisations attended the seminar.

Saleem said that unhealthy use of the internet was affecting moral standards of young people, who were now exposed to explicit and violent content. He said this had given way to vulgarity being treated as “an essential ingredient” of entertainment through theatre, movies and social media.

Faisalabad Citizens’ Forum team coordinator Hamid Sultan Dawoodi said that sale and use of pornographic material was banned in all Muslim countries and was punishable by law.

He said several Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Iran, had laws to control pornography.

He said the government needed to ensure pornography was banned and the ban enforced.

He said there was no proper regulatory control in Pakistan to check sale of pornographic material, and that it was easily available in the markets.

Some speakers said the reason behind increasing vulgarity was the lack of practice of Quranic teachings.
