ISLAMABAD:

A false alert regarding the presence of a bomb at Bari Imam created panic at the shrine on Saturday, the second day of Eidul Fitr.

According to the police, the bomb rumour spread around 4pm at a food distribution centre for the needy at the shrine where mostly women and children were gathered.

The rumour resulted in an immediate frenzy among the crowd and people started shouting and fleeing the scene.

The main hall of Bari Imam was evacuated after police received the report of the bomb alert and reached the spot, said an officer at the Secretariat Police Station.

Police immediately called for the Bomb Disposal Squad, the officer added.

The Bomb Disposal Squad conducted a sweep of the shrine and its vicinity but did not find any traces of explosives anywhere.

Police also searched the Bari Imam marketplace for potential suspects and dubious packages but found nothing.

No arrests were made, according to the Secretariat police.

The shrine was opened for public again after around an hour once the police had ensured the place was safe for the public.
