BCCI chief to step aside, not quit: Colleague

Bindra confirmed that former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya would act as president for the duration of probe.

NEW DELHI: The head of the Indian cricket board is to step aside while an investigation takes place into alleged spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), a colleague said Sunday.

The president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), N Srinivasan, had been under pressure to resign at an emergency meeting in the city of Chennai, but he appeared to have negotiated a compromise to stay in place.

"He said he will step aside but not resign at any cost," said Punjab Cricket Association president IS Bindra who attended the meeting.

Bindra confirmed that former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya would act as president for the duration of the probe into the IPL corruption allegations.

Srinivasan has resisted mounting pressure to quit after the arrest of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan on May 24 over his alleged links to illegal betting on the IPL.

Srinivasan, a 68-year-old business mogul in place at the head of the BCCI since 2011, owns the most successful IPL franchise, the Chennai Super Kings.

Meiyappan is a business executive for the team.
