Passengers were offloaded and no one was hurt in the incident, a spokesperson for the airport said.
Flight PK709 from Lahore in Pakistan had been due to land at Manchester in northern England with 297 passengers on board, but was diverted shortly before arrival.
A security source said early indications were that the plane was not the target of a terrorist attack.
A passenger who had just got off the plane told the BBC the pilot had informed passengers after landing that he had diverted to Stansted because of threats. The passenger, named by the BBC as Munsif, said two men had been handcuffed on board and removed.
"We landed safely and then he announced that they had some kind of threat from someone and that's why he landed the plane," the passenger said, speaking by telephone.
"Essex Police have boarded a passenger plane diverted to Stansted Airport and two men have been arrested on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft. They have been removed from the plane," the police said in a statement. The force is responsible for the area where Stansted is located.
"The two men arrested on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft are aged 30 and 41. They are being taken to a police station for interview by detectives," the police added.
Stansted is one of London's less busy airports, preferred as a location for handling airplane security incidents. A spokesperson for the airport said the plane was being held in an isolated area and that the rest of the airport was operating as normal.
Passenger Shahid Yaqoob told Express News that trouble brewed when in mid-flight there was an altercation between two of the passengers. He added that as the argument between the passengers grew, on board staff had to intervene and some hot words were exchanged. "the exchange of words were not of a nature related to terrorism."
Yaqoob added that they did not know the nature of the argument or what had happened as a result of the altercation, but when they landed in London and commandos boarded the plane, they knew it was something serious. "Four commandos with their leader boarded the aircraft and pin pointed the two middle aged passengers who previously had the altercation and removed them from the aircraft."
The passenger added that the two middle-aged men were handcuffed before being led off the plane. Shortly after all other passengers were asked to disembark. "We were not even allowed to take our hand luggage off the aircraft and authorities said that everything will be checked. "
The Essex county police though said that both of the people arrested were British citizens, ITV reported.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said 10 fire engines had been sent to the airport.
The Pakistani plane was a Boeing 777, according to the flight tracking website www.flightradar.com.
According to two tracking websites, the aircraft broke off from its descent about 60 miles east of Manchester.
It turned and followed a wide arc over northeast England and out to the North Sea before heading towards London.
Britain launches military planes to intercept unidentified aircraft when they cannot be identified by other means, for example when the aircraft is not talking to air traffic controllers.

Wonderful website. A lot of useful info here. I am sending it to a few friends ans also sharing in delicious. And obviously, thanks for your sweat!
Omgg that is realy sad i bet they were innocent and media have twisted it all
I was on this plane & arrested passengers were sitting just behind me.First time I found out that media reports are 50% false. They never tried to enter in cockpit & neither emergency exit. Those passengers were very rude which is fact and PIA air host having glasses on heated up those passengers by teasing them and insulting them time by time continuously.PIA staff should go for trial to pull all us on risk.Any info contact me on mobasharbashir@hotmail.com
Give these two guys an all expense paid trip to Gitmo for their heroics. They will have a lot of time to be joking.
@pakistaniat:
Rubbish claim. The plane took off from Lahore to manchester, (not from Islamabad) and the composition of that flight most likely would have been majority Lahori or other Punjabi's. Manchester and surrounding towns have huge non-mirpuri populations. Mirpuris prefer Islamabad as its more convenient.
The PIA flights to copenhagen/oslo and also other destinations in europe/mid east/US are no "hubs of great civilized behaviour either".
Blaming mirpuri's or anyone else for that matter, before you know any facts, just shows the mindset of many in this country, and why its where it is.
The were carrying brits in addition to the stated@expaki:
@Nadir: As usual the fualt is elsewhere. This is Pakistan plane with Pakitan passengers and the crew sought British help. How can you blame others for this????
All of you joking around on this matter.. shame on you. It is a matter of National Security and respect of your airline... you have been grounded, disrespected, and dishonored to the extreme level. I am wondering why Pakistan government didn't investigated the matter, protested to UK.
I'm pakistani and request other pakistanis that Pleeease Come Out of this STUPID mentality (Jahaalat).. For the sake of your own kids, generations. I know that we pakistanis are very selfish people and want to put everything in our own pockets, and want to grow our bellies as BIG as possible but we are passing on this insane mentality and habits to our kids. Please THINK ! before you speak or act. Because of a few people in plane, so many families would have suffered and even our security forces and fire fighters wasted alot of time and money.
And i really hope that those 2 are just Criminals and not terrorists.
@Pragmatic Observer: for that you have to free your mind from the influence of main stream media which is controlling the minds of people around the world.
@Rex Minor:
Excellent. Now they have the opportunity to sharpen up their joking skills at government expense in jail.
@gp65
"So you think you are respected in Arab lands? Interesting..." That you missed it completely, I can see. But never mind. It happens with people having one track mind.
@gp56. I guess you were not able to detect the sarcasm in the post by Elkey.
Ought we be surprised the latest incident off the back of the beheading of a London soldier will only serve to polarize tensions in the UK between Muslims and those who are calling for their ouster as once again the idea of Islam is conveniently stamped as an evil terror grudging doctrine...?

I am dismayed at the cynical comments above. Based on what we have been told, I think everything was handled in a very professional manner; no one was hurt and all are safe.
A bit of inconvenience to be sure for those traveling to Manchester but I am sure they will get to their destination in short order.
Well done PIA, especially the cockpit and cabin crew, and I also commend the security services at Stansted.
@Aarvey India: I think Nadir was being sarcastic - and you took it to heart -:)
A typical journey from Lahore to Manchester....
This was an argument between two men who happened to be Pakistani (or British Pakistani - I don't know). It wasn't a government sponsored action! Don't blame yourselves for this just because you have their nationality. It was just an altercation between two private citizens which got out of hand and turned into rather an embarrassing incident.
@Elkey: "If we must travel there are 50 odd Muslim countries to choose from. One must know where one is respected and where one is not."
So you think you are respected in Arab lands? Interesting...
Why do we have to go to UK, or for that matter to any western country who are anti- Muslim? If we must travel there are 50 odd Muslim countries to choose from. One must know where one is respected and where one is not. No point in blaming others.
Two Brits of Pakistan origin were simply joking is the statement they gave to the British police.
Rex Minor
@Pragmatic Observer: "Why can we not hear something positive coming out of this country?????" . It was just a little reminder from Nawaz Sharif, that he is back in power again.
Must have started as a political discussion over the last elections; we are notorious for crossing all limits in these arguments. Then they say Democracy is for us ! Rubbish.
@Nadir: No it's not. Two (almost certainly) Pakistanis fighting on a Pakistani plane flown by a Pakistani captain who acted in the interest of security. Britain is on the edge after the killing of the soldier in broad daylight so it isn't surprising that would take extra measures when an incident like this takes place.
As a Pakistani I would like to apologize to the British government, the Royal Air Force and the British people as a whole for the childish actions of these two "adults". This is a national embarrassment to Pakistan. The RAF had to send 2 Typhoon fighter jets, meaning they had to waste money fueling them, guiding them to the aircraft and guiding them back all because 2 morons made the threat of blowing up a plane full of innocent passengers just because they had a domestic argument. This is why our country has so many problems, people like this running about. I can't blame the Brits or the Americans for wanting to impose immigration bans anymore, honestly. I am close to feeling ashamed of being Pakistani, our people embarrass me and anger me beyond explanation.
@Arsalan Khan: very well said. I don't know why delusioned people like @nadir think western countries are jealous of Pakistan? why would they be jealous of us? what have we got for them to be jealous of us! Stop living in denial @nadir.
@Nadir: jealous of Pakistan? jealous of what? childish comment to make.
@Nadir: Please tell us what the West should be jealous of about Pakistan???
Typical mis-reporting by ET under the guise of 'Reuters' news. The captain radioed that an 'incident' had taken place on board the aircraft and it was diverted by British authorities to Stansted for safety reasons and escorted there by an RAF Typhoon fighter jet- standard procedure.
ET makes it sound as though the PIA Boeing invaded British air-space and was forced to land by an intercepting RAF fighter jet! What a joke!
ET: get it right for a change!
I think the two were fighting about who won in NA-250, MQM or PTI?
Not to be confused with some kind of state honour being conferred on the passengers.
Altercation between two Mr. Browns led to a fighter jet escort and commando guard of honor. Well done you made us all proud, or may be not.
Hollywood Movie can be made on this Incident. huh?
sorry to say but have seen british pakistanis are very low in good behavior standardds
Good for them. Hope the two passengers learn a lesson. This 'dadagiri' only works in Pakistani airspace. I have witnessed a similar incident in a PIA flight LHR-Manchester-NYC. The ladies had an argument with the staff and ended up locking herself in the toilet during take off. A senior member had to be brought from the cockpit to forcefully order the lady to sit in her seat.
Can I just correct- there's no such thing as 'east of central London' well there is in theory BUT Stanstead is in Essex, i.e. outskirts out of London.
So much trouble for just two people fighting on the airplane?
@np: What a dumb remark. I doubt the Americans would have radioed the PAF and asked for their help!
@Nadir: Don`t be silly! There is hardly anything to be proud of nowadays in Pakistan. Or why do you think many Pakistanis prefer to live abroad?? If you are not a male Sunni muslim who loves 12 hrs of loadshedding... you better leave ;)
Please stop the self loathing and Pakistan bashing! This is just like any untoward incident which happens on a plane. We can get other countless examples of people from other countries doing the same. So all of you all who are bashing Pakistan or being a self loathing idiot go look yourself and your country in the mirror! Many thanks
In Pakistan, everyone thinks they're a big shot. Would love to see the hot headed gentlemen saying "no Sir, Please Sir, sorry sir" to the British commandos. Classic.
Kudos to the pilot for altering the authorities and SAVING our reputation - contrary to someone's opinion above about how the western media is trying to malign us. Glass jawed Pakistani folks who act like they own the country - ridiculous.
@Sumer: Hahahhahahaha. YOu people see Dawood every where while sleeping, awake, laughing, crying. Stop it yar!!
@Nadir: What is there to be jealous of in Pakistan? Daily bombings? Power outages? No proper drinking water ? you must be out of our mind.
This sounds like a minor incidence.
There was obviously some perilous situation on the plane and on the advice of the captain of the plane, the jets escorted the plane to a location where the authorities thought would be easier to handle it.
The couple of trouble-makers will have been arrested.
From the information given here, there's no terror angle to this.
@Nadir " Western media--- jealous of Pakistan"
Jealous for what? For having no electricity and having no water? For the kidnap for ransom which is thriving like an industry? Of uneducated wild Taliban who are slitting throats of Pakistanis? Sick Pakistanis think that the whole world is conspiring against them and is jealous of them. This country has no future because of such sick people.
When would these bad news about Pakistan ever cease, I am getting heart burn every time I hear these kind of news. Please God help this nation of hot headed people.
Was Altaf Hussain being deported?
So called British Pakistanis will never learn how to behave at public place as majority of them come from uneducated backgrounds and they have to show this off time and time again. No wonder this plane was Manchester bound, must have got quite a lot of Mirpuri's inside.... No offence to anyone from identified area but that's unfortunately you are and you can't change that.
PIA airplane passengers getting the Chinese premier treatment.. lucky
Passenger numbers at PIA will surely pick up after this.
Attempt to fall to the most unpopular country from second most unpopular.
It looks like the reaction of Qeemay Walay Naan (Lahori)
Clearly the British airforce has a faster response time than Pak airforce did on May 1 2011
This is yet another effort by Western media, who are jealous of Pakistan, to further degrade Pakistan's image in international eyes.
Why can we not hear something positive coming out of this country?????
Maybe Dawood Ibrahim was onboard.
apparently a passenger didnt like the food, and made a fuss
PIA flight was carrying highly inflammable fuel that can be used to detonate manchester airport...
another event by the infamous, notorious PIA. 'Great People to Fly With'
Exploding Mangoes?
they've been harboring a terrorists their since last 15 years and sent their jets to escort our passenger plane?
Seems like a Jehadi brothers trying to rescue Woolwich murderer.
Fokker now flies to Manchester, hurray
Whaaat? :o
hope PIA was not carrying ANYTHING ELSE, than innocent passengers.
