KU students organise book fair

Fiction, non-fiction and academic books are being sold at 40% discount.

KARACHI: In an age when most people have given up the habit of reading books, Karachi University’s (KU) vice-chancellor congratulated his students for organising a successful book fair.

“We forget the fact that the basis of a visionary and knowledge-based society is the habit of reading books,” said Prof. Dr Mohammad Qaisar at the inauguration of a three-day book fair organised by the student-run Study Aid Project (Sap) on Tuesday.

The book fair has more than 50 stalls with around 300,000 books on fiction, non-fiction and academics. It will continue till February 14 at the university gymnasium. “Almost 40 per cent discount is being offered to make it affordable for the students,” said Abdullah Javed, who was one of the organisers. “Books of almost every kind and on every subject are part of this grand book fair.”

Dr Qaisar was happy that the students are pursuing such activities to encourage the new generation to read books.

Pakistan Peoples Party’s Prof. ND Khan, who was among the guests, said that books are a great source of inner enlightenment. They help us understand the true meaning of human existence, he added.

Appreciating the students’ efforts, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Nihal Hashmi said that it is very fortunate that our young generation is interested in motivating their fellows to read more.
