Kinnarid College for Women has planned a series of events over the next couple of months to celebrate the institution’s 100th anniversary this year.
The college will hold a day-long fun fair at its campus on Sunday and other upcoming activities include a sports day, milad, church services, musical evening, centennial play and an education conference.
The college’s media studies department is preparing a special supplement, to be released in February, while a commemorative stamp is to be issued by the Post Office on January 28.
“The college continues to be the first choice for young girls because of the all-round experience offered in both the academic and extra curricular spheres,” said Principal Dr Rukhsana David while speaking about the college’s centennial celebrations.
Dr David said that the college, established in 1913, was one of the oldest institutions for women in the region. It shifted to its current location in 1938 because the previous campus could not accommodate the growing number of girls seeking admission. There are currently over 4,500 students enrolled in the college.
The principal said that the institution sought to produce well-rounded graduates, which was why it was mandatory that students complete 100 hours of community service before they can get their degrees. The college also offers sports, dramatics and debating. “Our celebrations also include the success of our students, who have over several years, excelled in various spheres of their lives,” said Dr David.
Sheeba Alam, head of the Urdu department at Kinnaird, said that students and alumni would be part of the centennial celebrations, which kicked off with a special assembly earlier this week, when the college reopened after the winter break. The celebrations are to continue till March.
As far as their vision for the future is concerned, Dr David said the college was hoping to expand and upgrade. “In the coming years we hope to see our college turn into a university offering a wider academic experience to its students,” she said.
