KARACHI:

The administration of the University of Karachi is being accused of mismanagement and corruption in appointments.

A human rights activist, Muhammad Zahid Maqsood, approached the Supreme Court Karachi registry on Saturday asking it to take notice of illegal practices and order an inquiry into the affairs of the university.

The chancellor and vice chancellor of the university, the chairman of the higher education commission and secretary of the provincial education department have been cited as respondents.

The petitioner said massive irregularities were being committed in the university and the varsity’s management had made 700 appointments despite a ban by the federal government. On the other hand, the services of many others had been terminated.

He also referred to a report of the public service commission submitted to the Sindh governor, which identified such illegal appointments and terminations.

The petitioner said Rs60 million had been disbursed by the management to people of its choice ‘as advance’ during the last one year, but there was no recovery. The auditor general has also pointed it out in its report. He asked the court to call reports of the public service commission and auditor general. The court has also been urged to order inquiry into the irregularities and corruption through National Accountability Bureau.
