Minister’s cousin shot dead in targeted attack

KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon’s cousin was among the eight shot dead in the city on Wednesday.

Javed Memon, 42, was reportedly shot dead while on his way home from the bank where he worked as the regional manager. SHO Rao Rafiq said that Javed’s car was at the Habib Bank Chowrangi in SITE when two armed men opened fire at him. He was shot in the head and in the shoulder. His body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. SP Akram Abro said that it was a targeted attack and Javed was killed on the spot. Sharjeel Memon refused to comment on the demise.

Sindh IGP Fayyaz Leghari has constituted a three-member committee which will be headed by DIG Asif Ejaz Sheikh, chief of the district west police. The committee is expected to submit the report within three days.

Separately, two police constables, 35-year-old Naeem Atiq and 38-year-old Rizwan Ahmed, were shot dead by men near the Pirabad police station. They were guarding a Post Office van that was carrying cash. The suspects escaped with Rs100,000 and a machine gun.

In Lyari, 20-year-old Jamal Zafar Qadri was shot dead and his brother, Haider Qadri, was injured when two men opened fired at them.

They were taken to the Civil Hospital, Karachi.

Rameez Moinuddin, 23, was shot dead by two men on a motorcycle in Usmania Mohajir Colony in Jamshed Quarters while a 32-year-old security guard, Abdul Latif, was shot dead by another guard in Bin Qasim. The suspect managed, however, to escape.

An alleged robber, Imran Habib, was also shot dead during a police encounter in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
