LAHORE:
Continuing from the day before, schools held protests and vigils on Thursday in support of Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year-old schoolgirl shot in the head by the Taliban.
The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) declared Thursday Malala Day. Students and teachers wore black armbands and a candle light vigil was held at 8pm at the central courtyard on campus. A discussion on the incident followed.
The students and faculty also launched a fund-raising drive for the Malala Education Fund, which will be used to support education for girls, especially for girls from Swat. A statement released by LUMS said that by forming the fund, the university and its students “honour and support the noble cause of the 14-year-old for which she also received national and international recognition”.
Meanwhile, the Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) organised a rally from the Undergraduate Study Centre to Faisal Auditorium. Led by the acting vice chancellor, Professor Liaqat Ali, the rally included faculty members, employees and students. The participants wore black armbands and waved banners.
Later speaking to the media, Prof Ali said that PU teachers, employees and students strongly condemned the attack on Yousafzai. Acting PUASA President Dr Ehsan Sharif said that PU teachers were praying for her speedy recovery.
