FAISALABAD:

Dozens of people of two wedding parties staged protests and blocked Sammundri-Tandlianwala Road for traffic after they were robbed of belongings on their way to the ceremonies.

The blockade had ended after over two hours and the protesters dispersed on SSP (Operations) Sadiq Ali Dogar and SHO Tandlianwala City Ilyas Baig’s arrival at the scene and assurance of prompt action against the robbers.

The processions were stopped by robbers near Chak No393-GB and made to surrender cash, golden jewelry, mobiles phones and other belongings worth more than Rs.1.35 million.

The protesters said the robbers had beaten up some women on their refusal to hand over gold jewellery. They chanted slogans against Tandlianwala police and accused them of patronising criminals in the area.

One of the processions was headed to Sahiwal for the wedding of Muhammad Waseem, a resident of Islampura, and the other to Okara for Waseem Ahmed’s wedding.

Tandianwala police said they had registered FIRs on the complaints of the two grooms and started searching for the suspects.
