Independence Day: Blast, strike mar celebrations in Balochistan

QUETTA:

From flag hoisting and celebrations to a bomb blast and cellular service shutdown, Independence Day in the country’s largest province was a sobering affair, reflecting the gravity of challenges faced by 65-year-old Pakistan.

Functions to mark the 65th Independence Day were organised by the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps (FC), provincial government and civil society across Quetta but a shutter-down strike, called for by nationalist parties, was observed across parts of the province.

Meanwhile, the security situation in the provincial capital also remained precarious following a bomb blast at a restaurant late Monday night that injured 12.

Official celebrations

Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani, Assembly Speaker Muhammad Aslam Bhootani, High Court Chief Justice Qazi Faez Essa and FC chief Maj Gen Ubaidullah Khan Khattak hoisted the national flag on various occasions in the provincial capital.

The main function was held at the Nawab Nauroz Sports Complex where Chief Minister Raisani hoisted the national flag while the FC’s IG and the provincial assembly speaker and other provincial ministers were also present. FC personnel gave a salutation to the participants through helicopters.

Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi conferred medals on six martyred and two serving police officials at a function also held at the Governor House.

At one occasion, Speaker Bhootani said the situation of the country and the provinces implies that Independence Day should not only be limited to celebrations alone.

Unfortunately democracy was not allowed to flourish in the country; thus, despite a lapse of six decades, democracy is not sufficiently strong and many citizens continue to feel insecure, he said.

Deserted streets, strikes

Beyond the official functions, the atmosphere was hardly celebratory.

Markets wore a deserted look as people preferred to stay at home, and avoided public gatherings, due to security concerns following threats from Baloch nationalists.

A shutter-down strike, called by the Baloch National Front (BNF) and its allies, was observed in some parts of the province to denounce independence celebrations in the face of volatile situation in the province. Security forces patrolled the streets throughout the province to avert any untoward incident.

The strike call was also supported by other major nationalist parties, including Baloch Republican Party (BRP) and Baloch National Movement.

Two rockets were fired each in Kohlu and Gwadar districts, but no casualties were reported in either incidents.

Cellular services blocked

The provincial government on Tuesday blocked cellular services in Quetta and surrounding areas on the pretext of security situation.

Security sources said the services were blocked to cut off communication of ‘miscreants and terrorists’. The provincial government had also shut down cellular services on Pakistan Day, March 23, earlier this year on the same pretext.

Restaurant blast

At least 12 people were injured when a bomb hidden under a table exploded near a restaurant where people had gathered to celebrate Independence Day late on Monday, police said.

The explosive device, fitted with a timer, was placed outside the restaurant in Quetta, city police chief Mir Zubair Mehmood revealed.

It was timed to explode late in the night when people had gathered on the eve of Pakistan’s 66th Independence Day, he said.

“At least 12 people were injured, one of them is in a serious condition,” Mehmood told AFP. Hospital sources, however, said that “two of the injured are in critical condition.” (With additional input from AFP)

We celebrated Independence day in Balochistan with prayers for peace and development Pakistan and Balochistan. This year the celebrations were very festive with fireworks at the end of the day. City was illuminated and people drove with Pakistani flags. We love Pakistan and the enemies of Pakistan are desperate. These enemies of Pakistan are the biggest enemies of Balochs. These people wants to deny the human resource development which is a threat to their Sardari and Nawabi.
Some media coverage to the terrorists is given because they can harm the media personals. So the paragraph has been added out of fear rather than reality.

Dawn wrote the exact opposite and they had pictures to prove it. Whose agenda is ET working on? I am 100% sure this comment will be censored, so much for the freedom of speech claims by liberal ET.

Pakistani independence day was celebrated only in cantonments. Even in Balochistan assembly only 5 ministers out of 55 were presented. I am not a balochi but I fully support their freedom movement.

Those who are in self denial and put blames on ET please go through the above link. Dawn news just reported about Quetta , not all Balochistan. Even those fireworks functions were organized by FC and govt bodies in Balochistan. Overall situation in Quetta was tensed too. You certainly can’t save a country with lies.

@ AJ Khan You represent a typical mindset who is responsible for the current state of affairs of balochistan. Blaming foreign Hands and the Sardars is the excuse used by establishment and their paid servants to exonerate them from all their wrongdoings in Balochistan.

Today no one can celebrate or wanted to celebrate independence day outside the fortresses of FC. Why? This points need to be pondered and should be tried to understood and is key to resolving the Balochistan crisis. If certain people who know nothing about Balochistan, other than what Establishment disinformation factories have feed them, continue to praise the culprits and oppose the victims then I am afraid situation will be worse on next independence day.

I am pointing to people like you who have nothing to do with Balochistan. I am from Balochistan. I love Pakistan and I hate terrorists. If you like terrorists and you support them, then you are neither friend of Pakistan nor Balochs.

@Abbas Ahmad FYI the place where these celebrations are taking place isn’t your so called fortresses of FC. this is a stadium in the middle of quetta city. the program was arranged by the FC. so please if one doesnt know about something for sure, then one should refrain from writing it because normal people would read and believe it!

@AJ Khan Again your last comment proved my comment, The mindset like yours is disastrous for Balochistan. For your Kind Information I am also from Balochistan and know about the issue much more than what you can imagine. Whatever you saying is establishment propaganda and since 2005 actions based on establishment’s distorted vision are enacted in Balochistan and result is in front of you. So rather than confusing people with half truths and fabricated lies, you should either broaden your knowledge about the issue or refrain from giving any further baseless and comments.

@Anonymous I am not a stranger to the Quetta. Ayub Stadium is not a FC fortress but on the day it was made by 1000s of FC personnel who were guarding it. Outside Quetta independence celebrations were held precisely inside FC camps…. So please stop confusing people and confront the reality

First of all 1000s of FC personnel..please even you know that thats a far fetched number.. secondly it was a show from the FC so obviously they would be present there.. and as far as the guards were concerned.. they are there for your own safety..
Lastly did u even go there on 14th august or are you even in quetta?? or your just another guy sitting in some other city behind a computer laying these claims.. because i attended it and it was open for all audiences to come and celebrate our independence, and that is the “REALITY”
