Corporal punishment: Two students beaten by teachers for minor misbehaviour

One student was beaten with a stick only because he was standing on his desk while the teacher was away.

KHANEWAL/ RAHIM YAR KHAN: Two students were brutally beaten by their teachers in different incidents in Rahimyar Khan and Khanewal on Friday.

According to details, a student of grade five in Khanewal was beaten by his teacher for not taking an interest in his studies and for not following class decorum.

Student of a government middle school, Muhammad Awais told The Express Tribune that he was beaten with a stick only because he was standing on his desk while the teacher was away.

The injured student was admitted to the district hospital Khanewal for medical examination, which revealed that two of his right-hand bones had been fractured because of the beating.

According to the victim’s father Rana Muhammad Afzal, Awais was beaten 30 to 35 times with a cane. He added that when he approached school headmaster Iqbal Nadeem to register his complaint, he was asked to leave the school.

In another incident, a grade four student of a private school in sub-district Sadiqabad of district Rahimyar Khan was also beaten by his teacher.

According to the details, Ahmed Anwar was speaking loudly to his teacher who was sitting at a distance from him and was noticed by the school principal. The principal blamed Anwar of misbehaviour and beat him.

According to the father of the victim, Anwar was taken to a nearby local hospital where doctor suggested him to take bed rest for two weeks. He has signs of torture on his entire body.
