GILGIT:

The home department of Gilgit-Baltistan suspended deputy superintendent and assistant superintendent prisons, on Thursday, after a prisoner on death row escaped from police custody with the help of armed accomplices.

The prisoner, Imran Hussain, who was sentenced to death by a local court, had been brought to a hospital in a high-security zone for a medical examination.

Despite close proximity to pickets manned by the Gilgit Scouts and Punjab Rangers when the police was escorting the convict, armed men fired at the escort to free him and managed to escape from the scene.

As a result, Deputy Superintendent Jail Jan Alam and Assistant Superintendent Jail Sajjad Hussain have been suspended.

Deputy Superintendent of Police City Zabiullah Beg has been appointed as deputy superintendent Jail.

Hafizur Rehman of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz blamed the intelligence agencies and the police for the security lapse.
