Avenging Fakhra

It is deplorable that Bilal Khar has not been punished for what he did to Fakhra Younus.

Letter March 27, 2012

KARACHI: I fail to understand why a man who was charged with the attempted murder of his wife after allegedly throwing acid on her, ruining the remainder of her life and eventually causing her death, is still roaming around freely. Is it because in Pakistan, all that matters is for a person to have access to the corridors of power to get out of trouble even after committing a heinous crime?

It is deplorable that Bilal Khar has not been punished for what he did to Fakhra Younus. It is even more deplorable that Pakistanis choose to do nothing about this state of affairs. The government must make an example of such criminals, in order to prevent similar crimes from happening in the future.

Pakistan is a political oligarchy, run by the feudals, for the feudals. The Khar clan is no different. Only in a banana republic can the inexperienced daughter of a politician be brazenly appointed to the key post of foreign minister. So it's not at all surprising that her cousin can get away with throwing acid on an innocent woman. And, as usual, the Khar family has no comment on this. They're just too powerful to care. They're feudals.

"...deplorable that Pakistanis choose to do nothing about this state of affairs."

Pervasive norms of the society have been followed. Is that not enough?
