LAHORE:

Justice Sheikh Ahmad Farooq of Lahore High Court on Friday postponed for January 18 the hearing of an application against giving acting charge of the office to retiring Punjab University vice chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran.

The court had directed the acting vice chancellor at a previous hearing to personally appear and respond to the petition.

Dr Kamran appeared in court on Friday and sought time to file the reply. The judge accepted his request and deferred the hearing.

Dr Mugheesuddin, a candidate for the office, who had already filed a petition against a possible extension being granted to Dr Kamran, has filed this application challenging his appointment as the acting VC.

Dr Kamran was initially appointed the VC for four years under Section 14 of the Punjab University Act. His tenure ended on January 2, after which he was given the acting charge.

Petitioner’s counsel Asad Manzoor Butt pleaded that under the law, a VC could neither be granted extension, nor be permitted to serve as a stop-gap arrangement. He alleged that Dr Kamran wanted to continue as an ad hoc arrangement to help his wife and a cousin.

He submitted that the grant of an extension in service to a retired VC would violate a judgment by the Supreme Court in this regard. He requested the court to set aside the notification of Dr Kamran’s appointment as the acting VC.
