Consensus reached on construction of Diamer-Bhasha dam

Express July 18, 2010

ISLAMABAD: Construction of the Diamer-Bhasha dam was approved in a meeting of the Council of Common Interest in Islamabad on Sunday.

The key agenda of the meeting was to discuss the prevailing dispute over water distribution among provinces. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani chaired the meeting which was attended by chief ministers of all four provinces as well as federal ministers and other members of the council.

Speaking at the meeting, Gilani said that the CCI is the best forum for reconciliation among provinces and the federal government. He said that the provinces can bank on the CCI to come up with a solution to their disputes and leave its execution up to the implementation commission.

He said the CCI will meet at least once every three months, and added that the council will present its annual report to the Parliament.
