LAHORE: The Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) have picked up a doctor in connection with the May 31 attack on the Jinnah Hospital after “a thorough surveillance lasting over a month and a half” on July 10, officials in the agency have told The Express Tribune.
However, Dr Abdullah’s parents and colleagues dismiss the assertions and rule out his involvement in the terrorist attack. They say they will hold a press conference at the Lahore Press Club on July 17 to chalk out a strategy for his release.
Intelligence officials said that the ISI men had started monitoring doctors who they suspected might have facilitated the terrorists who attacked the hospital in a bid to free or kill a suspect named Moaz, who was injured during the May 28 attack on the Ahmadis’ places of worship in Model Town.
The sources said that Abdullah was the first one to send a bouquet to the injured suspect on May 30 while he was still recuperating in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).
Despite Abdullah being a junior doctor, they said, he gained access to the terrorist inside the ICU because of his alleged connections with the Islami Jamiat-e-Taleba (IJT) and the Jamaatud Dawa, which is a banned group.
According to the intelligence officials, six members of the Ahmadiya community, who were admitted to the surgical ward unit 2 of the hospital, indicated that they were not being given proper medical care and said that doctors’ negligence had caused some patients’ injuries to deteriorate.
During their surveillance, they said that they found that two of the doctors in surgical ward’s unit 2 had a close relationship with Dr Ali Abdullah, who “visited the Ahmadis’ ward several times a day despite working in a different ward”. He often “helped” his fellow doctors, prescribing medicines for the Ahmadi victims. A serving deputy inspector-general of police, who belongs to the Ahmadiya community, is also said to have alerted the ISI about the “suspicious movements of Dr Abdullah”. He is also said to have filed his own findings based on information gathered by provincial level intelligence operatives.
Dr Abdullah, sources said, was picked up on Saturday afternoon and by Monday, he was transferred to Islamabad for further questioning.
A local office-bearer of the Ahmadiya community, Nasrullah Baloch, confirmed that the condition of some of the injured community members had deteriorated in the Jinnah Hospital’s ICU. He said that they were now being treated at another private hospital.
Investigation SP of the Model Town Division Abdul Rab said that they were investigating about the missing doctor from all angles, adding that they had also questioned some of the relatives of Dr Abdullah in a bid to establish the extent of his links with the terrorists. He said that despite his being a doctor, his links with terrorists could not be ruled out.
Dr Sarfaraz, the suspect doctor’s father, who is also an additional medical superintendent of the Services Hospital told The Express Tribune that his son might have been detained because of his “ties with the IJT”, adding that his son might even have been killed.
Reaffirming his political affiliation with the Jamaat-e-Islami, he said that although his son had served as an IJT Nazim when he was a studying in the Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, he could not have been involved in abetting terrorists who attacked Jinnah Hospital. “It is not a crime to be affiliated with a religious political organisation.”
According to Dr Sarfaraz, his bearded 24-year-old son had been missing since July 10, adding that he had lodged an FIR with the Garden Town police station on July 11.
He said that a number of doctors had assured him that they would “paralyse hospitals across the province”. He said that the doctors had assured him that when they could “force the UAE government to release Dr Ayaz, our own government will not be able to sustain such protests for more than a week”.
Dr Ayaz was picked up by a US intelligence agency from Ras al Khaimah in the UAE on suspicion of having ties with al Qaeda. The detained doctor was freed after 64 days in custody after doctors in the UAE and Pakistan launched a concerted protest campaign.
The spokesman for the Jinnah Hospital told The Express Tribune that Dr Abdullah had been working in the hospital as the house officer in the surgical ward’s unit 1 for the past three months. He said that there was no doubt that Dr Abdullah was a “hardcore IJT activist, but he simply cannot be involved in facilitating the attackers”.

Does the Jamaat’e Islami know what Islam is all about? For that matter do most Muslims, particularly in Pakistan, know what Islam is all about? Isn’t our religion relegated to the poorer level of people, who have no more means than that of bare subsistence? The case of Dr. Abdullah is an eye opener for the youth of Pakistan. It shows ho insecure we are within our country. It shows that any agency like ISI or some other has an authority to kidnap us and take us wherever they want. They are not concerned about the parents of that doctor, his mother is begging to police and authorities for the safety of her son. ISI is not sure about the links of Abdullah with the terrorists and they are trying to hide their own faults. Do we forget the case of Manawan when they captured a mad and insane person and accused him as a terrorist. It is the common practice of our agencies and police to put the allegations of their negligence on others. So is the case with Dr. Abdullah when they can’t find any evidence and they failed to capture the real terrorists they selected Dr. Abduallah as their prey and showed him as a terrorist just because he was affiliated with JIT and he has a beard. But, this is not enough to prove anyone guilty and to kidnap any young Pakistani citizen. Just as “Nagi” says, we need to stop acting like well-educated yet biased illiterate snobs. Its simply unethical to portray assumptions and opinions as facts.

Before you can comment on that, Its important that you know that each patient’s chart is regularly checked by Head of the respective Surgical Unit.So either you can accuse the Professor of Surgery of perpetuating and “helping” in maltreatment and take him to court or you can shut up and stop making a fool out of yourself.
We were there when the attack happened and we witnessed many off-duty doctors who came back to hospital to assist. So its utterly disrespectful to doubt their dedication to the The Oath of Hippocrates that they take and the determination with which they follow Islam’s message of humanity. To them any Ahmadi is as human as any Jamati.Person’s belief simply don’t matter in the hospital.

@Hasan In case you missed it, here’s what I wrote exactly after the part you quoted..
“If, despite all the unsubstantiated “allegations”, anyone believes that Dr. Ali Abdullah did anything inappropriate, take him to court instead of kidnapping and torturing his family and friends.Separate your emotions from reason and stop advocating the widely popular anti-Islamic rants just for the heck of it..”
Despite the fact that there’s no evidence for any of what you so want to believe, trying him in court is the way to go,not kidnapping.I’m all for booking him If court decides he committed a crime. And thanks for labeling anyone who just seems to support reason over baseless allegations as a “Jamati” and making that sound as a slur..If you can’t prove what you believe he did and are more eager to ‘slur’ anyone who believes otherwise, then that just goes on to tell the world of the bigotry and dichotomy that you have within!Recommend
@Doctus: He will be taken to court in due course but like any complex investigation involving organised terrorism with several co-conspirators the authorities need to investigate him while preparing the case. Same process is carried out everywhere; UK, US any wherever else. When law enforcement agencies arrest someone for suspicion, that is not kidnapping its arrest; nothing to get upset about. This is not the first time that law enforcement arrested anyone during the current spate of terrorism neither is this the first time that anyone from Jamaat Islami has been involved in supporting terrorist; do not forget that several Al-Qaida senior members were arrested from Jamaat Islami members owned premises.
In the current atmosphere of insecurity, and in the suspicious circumstances that this not so good doctor acted we must give some credit to our security agencies for trying to do right. Yesterday’s bombing of Shia mosque further highlights the fact that we need to encourage our agencies to do more, not less.
In the meanwhile we are free to discuss the merit of his arrest based on what information is available to us.Recommend
Well it’s not the first time that ISI got some connections between Jamat-E-Islami and Terrorists, If we go in archives we will know many high level of Taliban’s leader and fighters have been recovered from JI’s members houses and many more are hiding under JI shelter. I’m always surprised when I see JI leaders statements, specially their scholar “Ibtesam Zaheer”. They are supporting Terrorisim directly in Pakistan, Pakistani government should take action against them.Recommend
If Bangladesh has banned books of the founder of Jamaat e Islami then Pakistani authorities must also follow suit. There are more Muslims in Bangladesh than in Pakistan.
The JI founder’s claim that Islam has been and can be spread with force has been an ideological stepping stone for all fringe extremists and intolerants.
Islam spread by winning over hearts and minds with gentle persuasion and without any tinge of compulsion.Recommend
Read their books and you will learn that all of you who are non-Qadyanis are kafirRecommend
No one knows whether poor Dr Abdullah is involved or not. He may or may not be. Even if he is a good Muslim according to his friends does not mean that he cannot support the terrorists. Even those terrorist suicide bombers are considered good Muslims by their friends.
JTI is not a banned organization. But its record is not very good either. They are the bullies of our Colleges and Universities. They are known to beat up and even kill some of their opponents. So their version of good Muslim can do the same. Most of the members of JTI, I will assume, are peaceful people. But their office holders who do not stop violence perpetrated from their ranks are NOT.
Not all of our medical students are in the colleges to serve humanity. There used to be a group of medical students in Allama Iqbal Medical College, called tick tick group. They used to beat up and kill people they disliked. A friend of mine, who is an Ahmadi, and his father were beaten up by them just for being an Ahmadis. I believe some of these medical student may have passed to become Doctors. So being a Doctor is not necessary a guarantee for being compassionate doctor.
Sending flowers to the injuried terrorist does not necessarily mean that the said Dr will do anything illegal to support the terrorist. There were people who were happy on the killing of Ahmadis that they distributed Mithai in Lahore. But that does not mean that they will do anything illegal. That just shows that they don’t know what Islam is about.
If what ISI did is against the law of Pakistan, the people who broke the law should be punsihed.Recommend

@Hasan, What west does or does not do is none of my concern. We have all seen their twisted morals and self-styled ethics in Abu Ghuraib/Gitmo and not to forget that many of them were, after “only” when tried in court, proven to be innocent. I’m sorry but I also don’t give a rat’s ass if the agency has been doing it before or not; clearly, two wrongs don’t make a right! No matter how insecure and suspicious circumstances, any “arrest” made outside of agency’s constitutional mandate is known as kidnapping, especially when that means stripping your citizens of their basic human rights.Unless you choose to believe that suspected terrorists are not human/citizens of this country at all, which leaves us nothing to debate on.Also whether you choose to believe in the very constitution is whole to-gather a different issue.
Secondly, Let me make it clear that I have no love for Jamat and as I already do, I will keep condemning every act of terror anywhere in the world but I refuse to step down from advocating people’s right of justice. How do I know I wouldn’t be “arrested”(read kidnapped) by the very agency for “supporting” an unproven “terrorist”? I’m sorry to say but its voters like you who believe in an Orwellian state and the state’s failure of providence of justice in process, which keep terrorizing the citizens of this country.
@ Khalid.I’m unaware of any incident like the one you quoted but what I do know is that most of the Ahmadi/Qadyani students expelled and transferred from Punjab Medical College Faislabad were particularly welcomed in our Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore and they enjoy the same respect and rights that any other student here does.It has come a long way then , hasn’t it?.This is the AIMC I know and would definitely want informed people like you to know too.
Stay safe everyone!Recommend
@Doctus
The incident I mentioned was from the nineties. I accept that I don’t know how it is going in AIMC now a days. Thanks for the update. I am very happy that the situation has changed in the college now.
I agree that if ISI did actually overstepped its authority, it should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Legislation is needed to control this type of incidents. If this goes on, it is just a matter of time when someone you know and love will be kidnapped.
I don’t trust Pakistan’s bureaucracy. I have never had a good experience of any government department. I have been to passport office, sales tax office, police and court. There may be some exceptions, but most of them are corrupt. Add to that layers of secrecy, money, lack of accountability, ability to blackmail, I-am-the-law attitude. That can give us an idea how dangerous, and out of control these agencies are. I believe that even the prime minister or army chief may not have effective control over these agencies.
In the United States, CIA cannot just arrest anyone in the country. There are a lot of legal restrictions on them. And they can be prosecuted for not following the law.Recommend
Salam to all,

dnt make such opinons abt persons like this. i knew him as senior in college and being neutral the facts about him:
he loved to follow islam….
offer prayers 5 times a day
abstain to sit in company of guys “moderate enlightened persons” who sits under library to oogle girlz n talk rubbish
his depth of connections with jamait e islami …is not known but in college under his supervision regular Quran dars was conducted [jst like its conducted in other places of country n that our obligation to learn Holy Quran] ; An annual book fair was organized by him and wat else…. he never preached any one during ddars to ” take riffles and kill people to pressurize government”
he was a hardworking man n good in studies.
if u have objection that “ahmadies” were not treated good , the treatment orders come direct from the PROFESSOR of the ward during his round time. everythng is documented , and u can check it. house officer Ali abullah cant influence so many senior doctors not to treat Ahmadiz well. a patient is 1st human and then he belongs to any religion for a doctor.
if he is guilty…. hez a citizen of Pakistan, qualified doctor… bring him to court, let his parents meet him [so that they have confidence that their SON is alive and then thy need not to threaten or call for jamming hospitals], give him a lawyer to state his view and interrogate him . if found guilty punishment by soul of law is accepted by all.
May Allah keep him safe and alive and protect SONs of this motherland. ameenRecommend
Peace to all,
I totally agree with Saadi. We know Abdullah bhai as our kind, neutral and polite senior. We never watched him as preaching to any one to take guns in your hands and kill all other people of different sects. Rather he is a true Muslim and true patriot, organizing healthy educational activities inside the college. Last year he organized annual book fair and well appreciated by college authorities and Principal sahab! He offer prayers 5 times, good in his studies, well to others in relations, a true patriotic person, and GOD fearing person. What any one want to be as good patriotic Pakistani Muslim???
He never talk about any other religious sects, never preached hatred about any group, though he belongs to Jameat… Then how is that possible that he accused about Ahmadies and did any anti-Pakistan activity??? I could not understand it….Though only Allah knows the hidden facts of our heart, yet what actually he is, I wrote it here!
May Allah protect our motherland Pakistan, show His blessing to this nation and make this nation as united! aminRecommend
bottom line….these terrorists live within our ranks..hideous, intolerant, fanatical people…pass a few exams like this doctor and become so called ‘doctors’immune from crtiicism…see how people are jumping to his defence..why does his jamaat preach their brand of madhab in a medical school…threaten, maim, or even kill opponents? why dont they condemn the so called suicide killers? why do they call others kafirs? when all they are practicing is the religion of abu lahab themselves?…the irony is that there are many like him in this hideous saudi money sponsored country and slowly they are starting to hurt everyone like a giant python begining to eat itself…Recommend

Whats disturbing is, people like him think they can spread Islam by forcing it on others. That, simply can not work anymore in todays society. Love and tolerance has to lead the way. As a former supporter of IJT I am definitely amazed at their stupidity and lack of common sense to be engaged in activities to help the enemies of Pakistan. when I was IJT was reasonable and led by people who could tolerate others.
We need to treat everyone the same in the law no matter who it is Ahmadi or any other minority. It is shameful how we treat minorities in Pakistan almost same as Hindus treated Muslims.

Just to make a very long story short.. i would like to say that all this began in the years when the MMA government was in power in the NWFP. remember the chief minister durrani and his coalation patners in the power set-up in those years these terror out-fits began their encroachment into the settled areas and cities of Pakistan…they had an understanding with the state government that they will stay low and will wait for the right time to do the terrorising. This is what wiill happen when you people in Pakistan will vote for a religious party into power..they will definately do this type of sickening things ..After these people reached the capital Islamabad, they stayed low at the Red mosque untill they provided the central government with the excuse to flush them out in the deadly battle that ensued there ..remember ? From then onwards the bombings started all over. i personally have been watching these events for a very long time..but just as a silent and helpless observer.Recommend

The peoples or his releatives/friends who doesn’t believe that Dr. Abdullah can involve in such activities actually are saying that ISI is wrong and it is playing in others hand. I think may be dr. abdallah personally is a good friend or person but his political thinking or the line of his plitical encroachement or assiciation from his student life convince him to do so. I wish it is not true but the agencies must have some information and we should wait till the time they complete the interrogation. Basically, Osama Bin Laden is a very nice person if u meet him but policy of killing and destroying has put a sing of interrogation on muslim community.Recommend
