LAHORE:

The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has removed 70,000 tons of garbage from 1,200 empty plots over the last three weeks, said a company spokesman.

As part of the company’s ‘Plot Cleanliness Move 2011’, 30 workers and 10 trucks cleared 280 tons of garbage from two plots in Johar Town’s J Block on Saturday, said the spokesman.

On Saturday night, the company arranged a candle light walk to raise awareness of the benefits of good hygiene in collaboration with local residents, students and volunteers in Johar Town. The plots were lit up with candles and the participants put up banners and placards with environment-friendly messages.

The spokesman said that LWMC teams went door to door to get residents to join the walk and to raise awareness about good hygiene practices. “The community involved in the activity pledged to maintain and ensure cleanliness in the cleaned plots,” he said.
