Gilani says govt will devise a plan to tackle the power crisis within two months. PHOTO: FILE
SWAT: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said that Pakistan views India as its most important neighbour and hopes to resolve all outstanding issues in a peaceful manner.
This statement was made by the prime minister during the counter-terrorism conference held in Swat.
Gilani said that Pakistan desires a result-oriented process of dialogue with its regional neighbours and hopes to resolve all issues including the “core” issue of Jammu and Kashmir with India.
The prime minister added that he hopes India will have a more positive attitude to the dialogue.
“India will have to play a more positive and accommodating role to respond to Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns,” he added.
He also emphasised Pakistan’s willingness to maintain peaceful talks with India, adding that “India will not find Pakistan lacking in will.”
While discussing Pakistan’s role in the war on terror, Gilani highlighted that 30,000 civilians and over 5,000 troops have lost their lives to terrorism.
He also added that terrorism has been a great financial burden on the economy.
Referring to Afghanistan, Gilani said that “a stable, friendly and peaceful” Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s best interest. He also said that Pakistan hopes to see an “independent Afghanistan without external influence”.

forget india and focus on eliminating the islamic fascists multiplying in our own society first. At this rate it won’t be india that will attack and destroy us but the islamic terrorists who we’ve funded, supported and trained for so many years. The monsters that we created have now turned on their masters and are now killing our own soldiers.
The madrassas which produce lakhs of islamic radicals every year have to be closed down as they do nothing but brainwash young children to hate anyone non-muslim.the children coming out of madrassas are filled with hate towards educated, working women, gays and lesbians, severe hate towards ex-muslims and atheists etc.
The prime minister should dedicate his efforts to finding the killers of shahbaz bhatti and making sure the coldblooded terrorist mumtaz qadri gets the death penalty for killing salman taseer shaheed.Recommend

@ sarmad khan: “you included a clause which by law now prevents any non-muslim from becoming the prime minister or president of our country”. This law was incorporated in the 1973 constitution by (among others) Z. A. Bhutto (known as the father of the 1973 constitution, which he himself violated almost immediately after it was passed). Secondly, the Constitution requires the “Head of State” (the president, not the prime minister) to be a Muslim. I believe we can have a Christian or a Hindu prime minister (even though it may not happen in 50 years).Recommend

Of course friendly relationship between Pakistan and India is in the larger interest of both neighboring countries and also for the prosperity of the whole region. But this desirable objective can only become reality if the leadership of both the countries take some tangible steps without getting pressure from well developed hegemonic establishment of both the countries. The other aspect is Pakistan can only convince India to resolve problems if it resolve its internal issues efficiently while the reality is that Pakistan is loosing its position in international horizons because of its week political leadership. Most importantly the events like Mumbai attacks can do nothing favorable in keeping peace process going but can only facilitate in increasing distrust and sabotaging the on going dialogue process which is the only ultimate solution of the problems between both the states.Recommend

Uncle Prime Minister Gilani, do keep in mind words carry meaning when they
are acted upon.Your government advised the Government of India to route its
neighbourly and good will donation of relief to flood hit Pakistani civilian
population through the United Nations inviting a minimum cut of 15% of the
donations in favour of U.N. as “operational expenses”! How clever and subjective
of you to feel having humiliated ” the most important neighbour”!
India has been consistent in showing positive response to Pakistan at all
times. It was Pakistan that showed cruelty against citizen Frontier Gandhi
in the first place and simultaneously make Kashmir “core issue” and
maintaining the status even after cutting its own nose in far away East
Pakistan!
As for Afghanistan, again words should speak in implementation not exploitation.
That will help establishing regional and global peace.By that all the concerned,
India, Pakistan and Afghanistan as well as the United States and the rest of the
world stand to gain.

RS Johar, I second your view.
Me thinks, that when people have more in common than which divides them, there is competition and differences that can escalate to violence.
e.g.: Arab/muslim vs Jews, Catholics vs Prostestants, Sunni vs Shia, N vs S Korea/Vietnam, muslim vs sikh, hinduism vs sikh and Buddhism.
We are all made from the same cloth, whatever the name of our God. With each killing and lie our maker must be increasingly restless at our disingenious behaviour. We are our worst enemies.Recommend
@ R S Johar: Manmohan is just a toady proxy of Sonia, so ‘yes’ all he can do is make these benign statements of ‘friendship’ once in a while. He is an economist and not a politician and therefore is a safe fill-up for the time when the real leader “Rahul” can take over. Yes, he has some good qualities and that comes from the fact that he was born in Pakistani Punjab. By the way, your pseudonym if it is fashioned after I. S. Johar, the great actor also came from Chakwal, Pakistan.
@ Mohsin Patel: What is your problem with PM Gilani? He is too busy giving measurements to bespoke tailors of Jermyn Street and Saville Row to sit down at his desk and do unnecessary work. Let the better sense prevail !!!Recommend
Dear ET, I am sorry for the long comments, but it was important to debate every part of the statement by our PM, thanks and regards
“PM said he hopes to resolve all issues including the “core” issue of Jammu and Kashmir with India.”
The PM or any civilian govt in Pakistan needs to get permission from the real rulers and then talk. Otherwise it would just be talking like Shamsi Airbase, where all the ministers had no idea what was the agreement with the US in 2006 and what was going on? Even better the PM ask the ISPR/Army leadership to make such peaceful statements on record to show their sincerity and support for peace. It should not be like the civilian leadership was talking peace with India while army under Mush was preparing “Kargil”.
If we are serious to resolve all issues, then let us start with the easy, doable problems and not with the most difficult like Kashmir. Once we resolve small disputes and build confidence and trade relationship, the other difficult issues can be addressed. This would be most easy, commonsense and pragmatic approach and both the countries would not have any problem with this.
“Gilani said that “a stable, friendly and peaceful” Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s best interest. He also said that Pakistan hopes to see an “independent Afghanistan without external influence”.
We know that the political leadership may be sincere; again the real rulers want to continue their dream of powerbroker in Afghanistan. I distinctly remember both BB and NS after 9/11 told the world that Mush/army is not going to handover OBL or kill him because he is a golden goose for them. It was only a couple of weeks ago; the Wiki Leaks disclosed that Pakistani generals don’t want peace in Afghanistan while they are sidelined. Once again it would be important for the govt to have the ISPR issue a positive statement to support the civilians. We do not want to involve the army/ISI/ISPR in any politics but only to serve the civilian govt, and fully support its policies.
““India will have to play a more positive and accommodating role to respond to Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns,” he added.
He also emphasized Pakistan’s willingness to maintain peaceful talks with India, adding that “India will not find Pakistan lacking in will.”
Pakistan’s security concerns are not from India they are from the Islamic terrorists and their allies. Pakistan and India both have shown their willingness for too long. Now is the time to show the real actions toward peace, friendship and prosperity. India must make a clear statement that they would never attack Pakistan in the current conditions. Without going into the details that who has been the actual aggressor, India being a large country must show their intention on record to pacify the alarmist apologists in Pakistan.
“Gilani highlighted that 30,000 civilians and over 5,000 troops have lost their lives to terrorism. He also added that terrorism has been a great financial burden on the economy.”
So what, this terrorism was not initiated or supported by India, the opposite is true. Our chickens have come home to roost. Of course most of our resources are devoted to defense, let us start trade and friendly relationship with all the neighbors and create new jobs and prosperity for poor Pakistanis. Why would Pakistan not try to follow the growth and wealth generation of China and India?Recommend

It is very difficult for a democratic country to be friendly with a theocratic state. It is for its own good, that Pakistan change to a democratic secular state. This shows, both people of both countries have similar aspirations and help foster true friendship between two neighbors. On one hand Pakistan can not say it has constitutional obligation towards Islam, and hence its seminaries ( harbor so called state elements, extremist, anti Hindu India), and on the other extend hands of friendship with a secular India.Recommend

All the neighbours are important for any country and hence peaceful co-existance is the only option for prosperous region.
Due to eternal hate with india, pakistan has been gradully consumed by own created off-shoots of this hate mindsets. It needs to cure itself from this deadly disease and to do it following steps must be taken.
a. Close all the madarsha, since it breeds only redical, unskilled youth, who can do only harm to any society.
b. Change the syllabus of studies and remove all the hate specific chapters.
c. Since, now pakistan has nuclear umbrella, it should drastically reduce defence expenditure, and invest heavily in quality education centres of engineering, MBA and medicine etc.
d. Till ( C) happens, it should negotiate with Indian educational institute and try to open the door of these institution for Pakistani students. Lot many seats in these institute goes unfilled every year in India and hence it will be a win win situation for both. institutes will get students and pakistani students will not require to spend heavily to get the same education in costly Australian or US education institute. also, students will get an opportunity to spend a longer period of time in India, they will know that Indian do not hate them or Indian are not their enemy. These students after completing their education will create large infrastucture in their own country and also moderate the views of common pakistani about India.
These steps will have a domino effect and hope in due course of time, we will be able to solve our problem and live as good neighbours.Recommend
I hope we will resolve all of our disputed issues peacefully, but practically not possible, due to many factors.Recommend

We are hearing right vibes since last few weeks. Barring few ones, the common public and the Governments on both side are singing tunes of friendship. Its nice for us and humanity. The process of peace should be on a fast pace. Whole India needs good neighbourly relations. I wish to visit Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and many shrines elsewhere in Pakistan. Pakistanis must also be eager to research Indian places and peoples. Cautious and right approach by ignoring hawks and military on both sides will save the day. I wish one day may come when we would be nations of ‘single sub-continent without restrictions’ for movement of the peoples of Bangladesh, Pakistan and India without losing national identities thereby getting prosper on all fronts. Then there might not be need of huge armies, and money saved could be used on education, infrastructure, agriculture and health etc. Indian job seekers are no more interested in getting visas from US and Britain. Job will be aplenty for youth if we unite our sub-continent. Good news all over.Recommend
@Sanjay Sharma:
Yes i too dream of such things and events, however its all bit too much wishful thinking for the people on all sides to agree upon !!!
We have always been hearing these so called vibes and remarks, but sadly they lack commitment and actions !!
Well those Shrines and Temple you dream about visiting may not be around for much longer as there is systematic and rampant abuse and takeover of places by local goons sponsered by their Politicians and Mullahs for destruction !!
First, one needs to educate the people of the region and leave religion in their place of worship, rather than in halls of Govt, than one can even start considering freedom to travel and open zone policies.
Our Neighbour’s phobia and indocteration of the importance of its Armed Forces will not be so easy to disregard, as these very people will obstruct any progress and development, in event their personal self importance is going to be on line !!
Still a great Idea, however not for the region and its people at present time, perhaps in next 50 years if the mindset changes and the education takes precedent over religous zeal!!!Recommend
