Renowned author Noam Chomsky believes Americans only serve themselves.
“Stability to the US means obedience. As long as Pakistan is obedient it will be considered a stable ally,” said MIT professor emeritus Noam Chomsky on Wednesday.
Chomsky said the moment Pakistan stopped cowing down to the US, the talks of nuclear threat and jihadi movements would start making headlines in the US media. He said while the threats existed, but they would merit action only when they threatened US interests.
“We’ve all heard the term ‘to stabilise the region’ from the US government. Whenever the term is used it actually means that the US will destabilise the region but ‘stabilise’ any threat to its interests,” he said.
He was speaking at the Café Bol in Gulberg’s Main Market on Wednesday. The lecture marked the season opening of the annual lecture series at the cafe. The first lecture included a tribute to Eqbal Ahmad, one of the most proactive political thinkers of the past few decades. Chomsky, a friend of Ahmad, himself enjoys what can only be described as cult status in a discipline that seldom endorses such interest among young and old alike.
Chomsky spoke to a packed audience of over 80 people in an empty room above Café Bol via skype from his academic offices at MIT in the US. He spoke on several subjects during the one-and-a-half hour lecture. These included a brief history of the World War II, US imperialism and involvement in Latin America over the past three decades and the consequences as well as a more recent take on Pakistan.
He also spoke fondly of his late friend Ahmed and the man’s involvement in improving Indo-Pak relations, his work with the National Liberation Front in Algeria and Ahmed’s politics. “He was an incredibly astute analyst. Discussion on every subject he touched upon was improved because of his involvement. He best predicted the future of both American and Pakistani political policy in the coming years,” Chomsky said.
One of the most interesting subjects Chomsky elaborated upon was the situation in the Middle East and the parallels that one could, and could not, draw from it for Pakistan. “The US and its imperial allies will always prevent a functional democracy in the Middle East because that places the region beyond its control. They like democracy on paper but the fear of ‘real’ democracy in other parts of the world is cemented in the US psyche. It would mean a severe lapse of control where they are involved,” he said.
With regard to Pakistan, Chomsky elaborated on his late friend’s view that the country’s leaders severely lacked commitment to the land and to its people. “Eqbal always said that there can be no revolution or change without a genuine commitment to the cause and that is lacking in Pakistan. Many don’t care if the country goes down the drain as long as they can profit from the fall out,” he added.
During the question and answer session that followed, the MIT professor was asked to address the recent allegations against him and others such as Tariq Ali for being ‘Taliban Sympathisers’. “I don’t like to answer such questions because it tends to give them weight,” he said. “It’s like saying I’m in favour of child abuse. It’s so insipid and without basis that it doesn’t merit a response,” he said.
With regards to the US-Pak relations post Osama bin Laden, he opened with a ‘Freudian slip’. “US-Pak relations post Obama or Osama? The fact is that not much will change from the present or at least it wont change quickly. Whether or not the US likes it, Pakistan is all it has got to keep control in the region. The country may not be it’s favourite ally but it is certainly one of the most important ones, if not the most. Aid will continue and support will continue. There is simply no other alternative.”
Prof Chomsky also addressed the Israel-Palestine situation during the lecture. “The US knows that it is losing friends and fast. Over a 100 countries now recognise Palestine in some variety or the other and that exceeds more than half the world’s population. We know we are all moving towards a two-state solution and even this US government is beginning to recognise that,” he said.

Maybe chomsky should also talk about the spread of islamic fundamentalism like cancer through our society. But he won’t talk about that as it’s not a popular topic with his audience. But an academic shouldn’t have a onesided biased view.
We know america has imperialistic tendencies but they also allow religious freedom & have not named & designated one particular religion as the state religion. No matter how much we hate them they have a society Jinnah would have wanted us to be like.
Jinnah’s was a secular vision but he died too soon & the islamic fundamentalists then took over the country to make it the dysfunctional state it is today.Recommend
Relationship between two like US & Pakistan practically means unconditional acquiescence of one in the interests of the powerful. A recap of recent events with Raymond Davis Case as the starting point will prove this point. Though finally the weak (Pakistan) surrendered to the will of the powerful (US), but even that tiny bit of resistance from Pakistan was considered the insult to presumptuous, arrogant US.
The Osama Saga provided them an opportunity to open their media guns on Pakistan maligning & censuring for being perpetrator of duplicity. Within a span of a few weeks, military & ISI ( Pakistan’s institutions hitherto most respected & idealized by the public for their supposed capabilities to defend & past contributions in the moments of crises like expulsion of terrorists from Swat Valley, tremendous job done in rehabilitation of flood victims), appear like weak, in-capacitated, unreliable & incapable of defending even their own assets like they failed in PNS Mehran terrorists attack case.
US is increasingly tightening noose around Pakistan & is disseminating the messages of bordering around the conviction that Pak Nukes are vulnerable & unsafe, hence US troops will be deployed around Pakistan’s key installations under protective custody. The moment Pakistan will show some resistance, thin line between stable friend & un-stable ally will vanish. Pakistan is in a proverbial in a wolf & sheep-like relationship, it will be policy of extreme prudence & diplomatic excellence which might allow the sheep to survive from the jaws of the wolf.Recommend
I wish Prof. Chomsky’s lectures could be arranged in other cities of Pakistan. we need to focus on the menace of radical islam that is eating up from the inside like termites eating up wood.Blaming others like america, india or europe won’t help us to solve our problems.living in denial doesn’t help anyone,we might decieve ourselves but the problem remains as it is.
We should take a good, hard look at our society & how radicalised it has become. We seem most interested & focused on performing religious rituals & having exhibitionist displays of just how islamic we are rather than focusing on making our country better.
look at our universities & colleges with the increased number of hijabis & burka women.Look at the alarming increase in the number of beards on our campuses.
Not shaving & hiding behind black tents doesn’t make one a better person but just shows how beholden one is to rigid religious dogma.Recommend
chomsky rightly said that Pak US relations will be as it was .point to be noted that he reiterated incompetence of military and political leadership not only to deal with the problems but he also questioned the sincerity and patriotism of both. Most literate pakistanis have a such feelings long before. Now pakistanis should decide that either they follow the past track or want to bring down status quo.Recommend

An intellectual like Chomsky is always in danger of being completely misunderstood in a country like Pakistan. The title of this story is something Prof Chomsky apparently shares with Muslim extremists. Does not it sound familiar? Talking about inter-state relations in terms of master, slave, obedience, defiance, honour etc. I wish Professor has something to say about Muslim fundamentalism, and its use by security establishment of third world country.Recommend
Um, no, having something less than 1,300 terrorist attacks per year and something less than two dozen domestic militant groups operating means “stable.”Recommend

Eqbal Ahmad’s advice was eagerly sought out by Edward Said also. Recent success of unarmed mass mobilization in several Arab countries and well-publicized tactics adopted by Palestinian protesters 2 weeks ago show how prescient he was:

I read the article, the summery is this, if Pakistan obeys all the required policies of US they will support us no matter what. The moment we deviate from the policies, we get hit via media. It is simple rule carrot and stick. Therefore, brothers if need to save our country we need to spread education across the nation to broaden the people mind. I am not talking the education we currently getting. It is better we should not get educated at all.Recommend
Stability doesn’t mean obedience.
Stability means being trustworthy and sincere. Unless, of course, you mean Pakistan is a bunch of liars from birth and the U.S. wanting honesty and sincerity requires an unreasonable and one sided demand.
Look at your own history. Your whole existence is basically one big lie from the view of a self-proclaimed victim of everyone and everything with a contradicting ego.
You lie, talk bad about everyone, make contradicting requests, play two or more sides, blame everyone else for everything and still claim you’re on some moral high ground. Have you no shame?
Face it, you’re a mess. It’s not about countries wanting to harm Pakistan. You’re such a mess and have been one for so long that people are willing to send their own soldier’s lives in to make it stop because it seems like the more you get blown up the dumber you get.
But, no, you freak out at the mere mention of someone else setting foot in your country as long as they’re not there to kill you. You say it’s your pride and dignity at stake and you’ll take care of it yourselves because you have the ability and desire to do so. Guess what? You’ve killed any chance at pride, your dignity can’t be found and the fact it keeps happening with no progress shows you even lie to yourselves.
Your denial is putting the lives of the world at stake. Don’t be surprised when the world gets tired of your empty promises and starts getting things done for you. You may claim ownership over the land called Pakistan, but you sure as hell don’t own the world and if you condone and harbor threats to that world, you’re going to get the world’s unwanted intention regardless of whether or not you say you know about it or agree with it because even if that is the case, it still means you’re incompetent and someone else has to do it anyways. You speak of the innocent parts of the population. Those innocence are simply targets like everyone else. They’ll die either way, be it war or pretending you know what you’re doing and leaving you alone. The innocent may accidentally die here and there, regretfully. At least there are good intentions. If not accidental drone kills, you’ll end up with deliberate mass murder.
In the end, you are the world’s poster boy for victimization in your eyes, right? Come on now, why ignore what’s happening inside your borders? It gives you one more thing to cry about. Do it while there are still shoulders available to cry on.Recommend
If you beg for money and don’t have vibrant economy and puppets running the show what relationship can u hope for? in Pakistan it is same relationship between Army and politicians and the public, of a subservient.
Pakistani public pays the price of this insubordination.
Eqbal Ahmad, Faiz and Abdus Salaam and many others left us desponded and in homelessness so what else is new.
What others countries do globally is part of their policy and we should not be alarmed. US has been a global power and has a right to protect its interests. If Pak leaders and their masters (army) are spineless and corrupt then why is it USA ‘s fault.
Where else but in Pakistan you would find a OBL type person living for five years undetected under their nose. If any one cared for Pakistan especially Army then why are we surprised that he as found where he was. Did we expect any better of course not. They don’t care for this country in their mindless strategic childish games.
They expected to fool the goras forever well it didn’t work as none of their grand mindless plans like Kargil etc have ever worked. Need educated and restructured Army and real democracy not sham as it exists today.Recommend

you must not forget that this is all your mess that we are trying to clean up-your mess that has caused us more lives than any other country in the world. had your leaders not been shaking hands with OBL himself and drawing under-the-table plans to incite jihad ism in the Afghan and Pakistani youth during the cold war to overtake USSR, only to let them lurk with all the training and weaponry afterward, we never would have been in this mess in the first place…
it is the ultimate desire of the US to extend its super power status for the next 100 years, that the world is so destabilize and bloody. of course, Pakistanis are not the only victims, dictatorships around the world and mostly in Muslim countries is backed , funded and supported by the US. remember the assassination of Che Guevara by the CIA in 60′s….does that ring any bells?….
you created jihadis. you funded them to rage war. you gave them training. you radicalized the Pakistani society. and you left when your purpose was done. its unbelievable that you come here and give us a lecture on self respect and harp of what really integrity is when you yourself shamelessly ignore your share in all the mess.Recommend
Well Mr.Mark
Before you point figure, please look at the history. In Pakistan V/S US, we have helped each other in all respect but one thing US did not do was provide help to when we needed, putting stupid and corrupt people in the country will make the matter worse. Thousand people died due to suicide bombing in the country.
The other thing our history, it is clear only US decide who will rule the country, why not make Pakistan 54 or 55 state of USA then. If people say or even try to say they are dead because to shut them permanently.
Finally, we are not the mess, your CIA made this country a mess and now they cannot correct it. Therefore, before you comment again research again may be you will find more what you write here.Recommend
Chomsky, no doubt, a great statesman of his era, has grown old and lost touch with reality. This is a different world than Chomsky lived in. It is crystal clear that Pak-US relationship cant continue as it continued in the past. Realities have changed. There is no more cold war. America would like to change geo-strategic worldview of Pakistan and that is obvious but it is very surprising that a statesman like Chomsky could not see it. Literally, both the states are on warpath and this statesman is forcasting that same old relationship will continue.Recommend

Pakistan government, eversince its independence, has been in the hands of Seculars. Ayub, Yahya, Bhutto, Sikander, Nawaz, Benazir, Musharraf, Zardari, all of them were totally secular. Some of them used the name of islam to lift their popularity in Islam0wanting society. Not even for a single day, Islam has been put into constitution/law of this Islamic republic. Secular rulers have always been playing hypocricy. Zia is sometimes named as an Islamic ruler, but I totally disagree to this. Had this state been blessed with a true islamic leader/ruler, the situation would have been totally different. What I say is either remove the name “Islamic” from the name of the country OR make is islamic in real manifestRecommend

Convicts, killing indigenous people. Against Afghanistan, entering there in the name of Al Qaeda and OBL and forgetting about their cause as soon as they were in (referring to Bush’s statement who said that he didn’t spend that much time thinking about Bin Laden in 2002, one might think that OBL being the cause of invasion he should have been walking, talking, sleeping, breathing Bin Laden) while pulling out of there will destroy Pakistan along the way.
