TEHRAN: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a meeting with Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik urged Islamabad to boost cooperation with Tehran to intensify campaign against terrorism, Iran's Fars news agency reported on Thursday.

The two sides should spare no efforts to continue campaign against drug trafficking and terrorism, he said, adding that such cooperation would be to the benefit of both nations and the entire region as a whole.

Iran fully backs development and security of Pakistan and believes that the two countries can protect the security of the region, the President said.

"The existing relationship between Tehran and Islamabad is excellent and no one can harm it," Fars quoted Ahmadinejad as saying in meeting with Malik on Wednesday.

President described ties between two countries as "deeply-rooted, historical and cultural. There are suitable grounds for expansion of all-out ties as well as regional cooperation. Growing ties would help bolster peace and stability in the region."

Pakistan Interior Minister, for his part, called for expansion of friendly relations between two countries.

"Pakistan will uphold ties with Islamic Republic of Iran using all its potentials. Pakistan always backs Iran's legitimate rights and never lets any third country take action against Iran through its soil," he added.

Lauding humanitarian aid dispatched by Iran's government and nation for flood victims, he said Pakistani people would never forget Iranian support.

Arsalan | 12 years ago | Reply @Saeed Irfan: Brother, that assessment is bang on target!! Iran, internally, is at peace where the masses are satisfied. Of course there is a political opposition who has a voice - just shows acceptability of human variations with reference to political views. The reason for economic sanctions is simple: if you allow Iran to paint on the Global canvas and exhibit their culture and flex their economic muscle, "John" will be soon considered a third world citizen! Facts of the matter are simple: 1. Iran produces close to 9000 MW of surplus electricity at a cost/MW output which is the lowest in the WORLD!! $450,000 - $500,000 / MW output. 2. Iran is sitting on unquantified liquid reserves in EURO which can create havoc in terms of buying of Sovereign Bonds - just as China today owns 40% of US Treasury Bills. 3. Iran enjoys a social culture underpinned on the undercurrents of its youth - they are happy with the openess on offer, and the 'broad' restrictions in place. Just let them be and mind your own country!! 4. You allow Iran to trade, based on comparitive advantage, and the entire region will become the economic power hub of the world. What its neighbours lack, they have, and of course vice versa. 5. There is only ONE country which has used a nuclear bomb in history - there is only one country which has used bullets dipped in uranium on citizens - there is only one country which introduced Bretton Woods. OMG, in the words of Iron Maiden, what you've got on your hands Mr. John is an "educated fool". read between the lines, at your own peril
