An agreement signed between the Worldwide Fund For Nature (WWF), Pakistan, and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) will allow the former to use the latter’s satellite images for its research projects.
WWF director general Ali Hassan Habib said the agreement was signed after they rescued 100 hog deer stranded near Taunsa Barrage with the help of satellite images of Swat, Taunsa Barrage near Multan, Sukkur Barrage and Keti Bandar in Sindh. Habib said the images were provided by SUPARCO so that the WWF could analyse the extent of deforestation and the number of animals stranded in the areas. He said 10 of the deers died.
Habib said the WWF had to pay around $3,000 on average to obtain five to 10 years old satellite images of areas where it was conducting research. He said the agreement would help the WWF cut costs.
