Suicide cases: One killed, one survives in separate attempts

Motives unknown in either case

HARIPUR: Two people attempted suicide on the same day in different parts of Haripur, resulting in the death of one man while other the other survived due to timely administration of medical treatment.

The first case was reported in Mirpur village in the Khanpur area, where a young man shot himself in the head on Sunday evening, just a few hours after returning from the United Kingdom. The Khanpur police quoted Khalida Bibi as saying that her son Waqar had been living in England for the last few years.

Investigation initiated: Police smell something fishy

On Sunday morning, he came home and started meeting guests who came to see him. However, after evening prayers, he went to his room and after a few seconds the family heard a gunshot and rushed to Waqar's room, where they found him critically injured with a pistol lying next to him.

He was taken to Khanpur Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. A motive for suicide had not been determined when this report was filed.

The same evening, another man attempted suicide by drinking bleach in Malikyar. Police quoted Rozina Bibi, as saying that her husband Shahid, 35, was a daily wage earner.

On Sunday afternoon, he came home and became angry after a heated exchange with her over a petty family matter and drank from a bottle of bleach. He was rushed to Women and Children Hospital, Haripur, from where doctors referred him to Ayub Teaching Hospital to get his stomach washed, which saved his life, according to the police and the complainant.
