ABBOTABAD: Abbottabad police on Sunday said they had booked a local journalist for threatening a villager.

Donga Gali police said that Riasat Khan had filed a case about a local reporter who had been publishing false and baseless stories against him.

Khan is the father of 16-year-old Ambreen Bibi, who was burnt to death in the Makol Payen village in Galiyat area on April 29.

In his complaint, Khan alleged Sultan Dogar, a photojournalist and a reporter attached with a local paper had been publishing stories which were blowing the case out of proportion.

When Khan called Dogar to ask why he was publishing false stories, Dogar got infuriated and threatened Khan.

Thereafter, Donga Gali police on Khan’s compliant registered a criminal case against Dogar under section 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). Dogar, however, obtained pre-arrest bail till October 22 from a local court.

Meanwhile, at a joint meeting of Abbottabad Union of Journalists and Abbottabad Press Club, the participants condemned the move against Dogar and termed it a step against freedom of expression.

They said that the case was fabricated to pressurise the media to stop writing against the police.  The speakers vowed to continue reporting on issues which affect the public without fear or favour.
