KARACHI: A group of unidentified robbers looted over a dozen shops at the largest book market of the city, Urdu Bazaar, situated on MA Jinnah Road Friday night.

In an attempt to loot cash, the robbers sneaked into sewerage lines to break the locks of at least 15 shops in Urdu Bazaar, and got away with Rs50,000. The shopkeepers got to know about the robbery once they came in to work as per routine on Saturday morning, said the police.

On seeing the broken locks, the shopkeepers started to gather on MA Jinnah Road to stage a protest, said the police, adding that other shopkeepers and traders also joined them and protested for at least two hours. Following the incident and protest, the police also reached the site and calmed down the protesters, assuring them of their complete cooperation, after which the shopkeepers ended their protest. A watchman of the book market was detained for questioning to get any leads in investigations, said the police.

A case has been registered while further investigations are underway.
