SRINAGAR: Two Indian border guards and a suspected rebel were killed on Monday in a gun battle in Indian Kashmir while another victim of Indian brutalities succumbed to his wounds.

The Indian army claimed to have shot dead a man near the de facto border with Pakistan, although it was not immediately clear whether the deceased had crossed into India from there.

“Two Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers were martyred and a terrorist was killed in the gun battle,” Indian Army spokesman NN Joshi told AFP.

Meanwhile, a teenage boy identified as Amir Lone, a resident of Shopian, succumbed to his injuries on Monday, bringing the death toll to 56 in a month of unrest in the disputed valley.

Amir was injured in clashes on July 29 and was under treatment at the Soura Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar. He was seriously injured after being hit by pellets from close range.

Indian Kashmir has been under a curfew for the past month.
