LAHORE:

People should rise up against corrupt and incompetent rulers, Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri said on Wednesday.

He was talking to reporters at the airport after returning from the United Kingdom.

“The whole world saw the live coverage of the Model Town violence. Policemen were shooting at unarmed civilians. Not one of the killers has been arrested so far. This can only happen in Pakistan,” he said. Qadri said that if the government did not ensure justice in the Model Town violence case, he would launch a protest movement.

“We want retribution [for the Model Town deaths] and will not settle for anything less,” he said.

The PAT chief said that the army chief should intervene to ensure that justice was served in the case.

“The prime minister is said to be not well enough to attend to state affairs. However, he travelled to Muzaffarabad to celebrate his party’s election victory,” he said.

He said that the politicians who had obtained bank loans and then got them written off must be brought before courts. The PAT chairman condemned the attack on soldiers in Karachi, saying the government should take a tough stance on terrorism in the city.
