BAHAWALPUR:

Officials of the Parks and Horticulture Authority and Bahawalpur TMA told the commissioner on Monday that of the 261 billboards in the city, 137 were in a dilapidated condition and required immediate repair. They said relevant departments had been given directions regarding the repair work.

Commissioner Saqib Zafar had called a meeting on Monday to discuss progress on the inspection of shaky billboards installed at heavily-populated areas of the district. He had directed PHA and TMA officials last week to launch a crackdown in this regard.

The officials told the participants of the meeting that they had checked the quality of billboards installed at various locations and had removed the most vulnerable structures from urban areas. The meeting was told that all illegal bill-boards and hoardings were being removed as part of the crackdown and the relevant contractors had also been fined.

Saqib Zafar stressed the need to implement approved standard operational procedures pertaining to the installation of billboards in the city. He said that security of citizens was of a vital significance and billboards and hoardings which might threaten the lives of citizens must be removed immediately.

He said there must be a strict ban on installation of billboards near mosques and the Eid Gah.
