BAHAWALPUR:

A constable died on Saturday after a pistol, an assistant sub inspector was cleaning, went off. A case has been registered against the ASI.

Musafir Khana SHO Hussain Raza told journalists on Sunday that he had sent Constable Muhammad Amjad to speak to Sub Inspector Shabbir about an official errand. ASI Shahid Anwar was at his office cleaning his pistol when Amjad arrived. Raza said a bullet had gotten stuck in the chamber and the pistol had gone off killing Amjad on the spot.

Some cops at the police station told The Express Tribune that they had heard three gunshots from the ASI’s office at around 6:30pm. They said that they had initially thought that the two had argued and that Anwar had shot Amjad dead in a fit of rage.

ASI Anwar said he was cleaning the pistol when it had gone off. He said he had no personal vendetta against Amjad. “I shot two remaining bullets in the pistol in the air.”

Amjad was laid to rest on Sunday. Funeral prayers were offered at the Musafir Khana Police Station ground. The body was buried at the family’s village in Toba Tek Singh.
