LAHORE:

Sabzazar police have arrested a 45-year-old rickshaw driver for attempting to rape an eight-year-old girl on Saturday evening.

Investigation Officer Muhammad Asif said the girl studied at Junior Model Girls School on Wahdat Road. Her parents had arranged a van to pick and drop her. On Saturday, the van broke down and the driver sent her home on a rickshaw.

Asif said that instead of taking her home, the rickshaw driver took her to a deserted place and tried to rape her. “When the girl did not reach home, her family started looking for her. They caught the rickshaw driver who was trying to assault her,” Asif said.

He said the family called police who arrested the driver, a resident of Mansoora. Police have registered a case against him under Sections 376 (rape) and 511 of the Pakistan Penal Code, on the complaint of her father, a resident of Nadra Town, Sabzazar.

Asif said police were now waiting for the medical report.
