ISLAMABAD: Army Chief General Raheel Sharif on Friday said Pakistan would continue to support peacekeeping operations under the banner of United Nations.

His remarks came during his visit to Ivory Coast where he spent a day with the Pakistan Army contingent deployed as part of UN peacekeeping force.

The army chief visited Ivory Coast as part of the last leg of his three-nation tour that also took him to the United States and Brazil.

According to Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lt. General Asim Salim Bajwa, the army chief said Pakistan was proud of its historic and current role as the major contributor to the UN peacekeeping missions.

General Raheel said Pakistan, being one of the leading contributors, deployed troops on six UN missions despite the army’s preoccupation with ongoing fighting against terrorism including operation Zarb-e-Azb and intelligence based operations.

“Pakistan is committed to meeting emerging challenges of peacekeeping operations and continues to ensure the UN and Pakistani flags keep fluttering high,” he said.

The army chief paid rich tributes to officers and men for professionalism and their commitment to bring stability and promoting peace for a secure world under UN.

He acknowledged the sacrifices of Pakistani troops in the UN peacekeeping operations.

“Our troops are proving their mettle in UN peacekeeping missions,” he said.

On the occasion, the Ivory Coast president paid rich tributes to the excellent performance of Pakistani troops, said the chief military spokesperson.
