HYDERABAD:

The celebrations of the 272nd urs of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai officially began on Friday in Bhit Shah, Matiari district. Special assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister for Auqaf Abdul Qayum Soomro and provincial adviser for the culture department Sharmila Farooqi performed separate inaugurations.

On Thursday night, Syed Waqar Hussain Shah, the shrine’s caretaker, also formally started the urs celebrations by laying a chadar at the shrine. Deputy commissioner Ghulam Murtaza Shaikh expects 400,000 to 500,000 people to visit the town during the three day celebration. Some 2,400 policemen and 70 personnel of the Sindh Rangers have been deployed for security.

A cultural village, showcasing depictions of the rural lifestyle, sugharan ji katchehri [conference of folk sages], malakhra [traditional wrestling] and a musical night enthralled the visitors on the first day. All the government buildings in the town, besides the shrine, were decorated with colourful lights.
