The history of haiku is as much a history of the Japanese cultural atmosphere as it is a genre of poetry, and the Pakistan Haiku Society (PHS) has played an extremely significant role in the promotion of haiku in Pakistan. This was said by Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Inomata at an award ceremony held at the ambassador’s residence on Thursday. Inomata conferred the commendation on PHS President Naseeme Sehr on behalf of Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida.
The award is in recognition of the significant contribution of PHS in promoting haiku poetry in Urdu language in Pakistan.
Inomata expressed pleasure with the number of Pakistani haiku poets that have published books on the subject.
The latest PHS initiative, started last year, is organising haiku writing workshops in which Japanese language students and others are given training on the basic principles of haiku writing.
