HARIPUR: Social activists have unanimously elected a 33-member district assembly in Haripur earlier this week. The initiative has been introduced by the Haripur chapter of Sungi Foundation and seeks to encourage potential women leaders in the district. During the first phase, participants constituted a district assembly with 30 women on regular seats and three men on reserved seats with consensus. Saiqa Arif and Rasheeda Bibi were elected speaker and deputy speaker respectively. Sungi Foundation Regional Coordinator Ejaz Khan said the event was aimed at identifying and encouraging the role of women in society. “This should encourage women to participate in the decision-making process,” Ejaz said. He added capacity-building sessions would also be arranged for members on tabling resolutions and preparing budgets.
