Russia will not be drawn into new arms race, says Putin

The European nation was working on developing a missile system able to penetrate the US missile shield

SOCHI: President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia is not going to get drawn into a new "arms race".

On Tuesday Putin said that Russia was working on developing a missile system able to penetrate the missile shield being planned by the United States.

curious2 | 9 years ago | Reply Russia military spending has doubled under Putin - if that's not "racing" what is? Fortunately for the USA the Russian economy is small by comparison and even though Putin is spending much more than the USA (percentage wise) it's economy is shrinking and it's unlikely that Putin can maintain that rate of expenditure. Putin wanted to modernize Russian military and make it a major force competitive with NATO - unless oil prices rebound that's never going to happen.
